I know where you´re coming from. But I estimate that this strong goodbye is more to stress their new connection (she is also gripping our hero with her hand), with Sophia normally being so cool, stand-offish and calculating. In addition Sophia knows more about the going-ons behind the scenes, so she has a good assumption of how bad the exhibition and following week will be. Also we know by word of God that Sophia is the most important not-Main LI going forward.

I agree with you on this, both are needed elsewhere, Sophia with Abel and Edwin has to lead Elias to his doom. I too see this emphatic goodbye as a facet of Sophia´s personality, who has problems with social stuff due to her eccentrism and how she grew up. Given her problems with social cues it seems to me she wanted to make sure Edwin gets her feelings. She also touches him when she is saying goodbye. We also have this gem of socially imept nerds flirting:
