It's because, let's be honest, people are a bunch of whiny little bitches. Eric from Big Brother was equally hated and that guy was a joke. Although he was a constant presence, in reality he was a non-factor in that game and never had a sense of danger about him. He was basically a roommate who did nothing. But people wanted him gone because "MY GIRLS!". Hunter, you could argue, is also a non-factor since he only pops up during chapter breaks, but that's when he reminds the player what the stakes are.
Believe me, if someone made a game where there's a male character who says "hi" to the girls every day, there would be people screaming to get rid of him because they're so insecure.
