Shizue and Clementine have great facial expressions and are pretty dang emotive. And the story has a strong start. Since you've chosen to give the eyes more real estate on the face, it is imperative that you inject some life into them. If you're able to, give those eyeballs some highlights. That'll be a huge step away from the uncanny valley.
