Welp, I finished True Mercy, pretty neat in my opinion. Overall the game is kinda difficult, but oddly fun for a porn game. However, now I want to go for a genocide route, specifically this Hypocrite one I saw a guide for. I think I'm prepared but I do want to ask, if I were to go back to my true mercy completed save, can I still fuck with the befriended monsters, or is that out the gate as soon as I start a killing spree?
Copy your save data and publicdata.rv2 to a different folder. Otherwise, since kill count is universal across saves (because of said publicdata.rv2 file), the demons are gonna start saying peace out from your TM when you start killing them in the new one.

Best way is making a copy of your save folder and PublicData.rv2 to avoid corrupting your saves.
Another method is, after completing Genocide/Hypocrite, doing two whole runs (first one up to Neutral B chapter, second one can be True Mercy). Only disadvantage is ending screen changes.
Dev released Shrift 2 but when is the finalie for this game going to come i have everything done just wanna go complete the thing behind the encyclopedia but its not implemented yet

Uh...I may not be getting everything about this combat system but am I essentially unable to level up if I don't kill demons?
Or does finishing them off not kill them and just mean I loose a bunch of friendship?
Because so far I have just let every demon go and I wonder whether that will mean that my char will be super weak.

The game is like Undertale, if you want a True Pacifist ending, you cant get exp.
Pretty much what LainHarth said, the game is effectively Sex Undertale. Yes, I am aware of how weird that sounds, but it's true.
Spare demons, then befriend them in My Room when the new chapter comes up, and that's how you power up in the Mercy route. Alternatively, just kill em and level up and that's how you power up in the Genocide route. Though, you're not allowed to go full Genocide your first playthrough, you need to actually finish one and start a new game in order to do it... for whatever fucking reason the dev decided that.
Never played Undertale but seems I did well then. I suppose I can get by by spraying things with a machine gun.
