I really wonder why you have to reply to me when I was replying to the guy who thinks the dev "has no fantasy"
But if you think I "bit the hand that feeds me" well, thanks for the input I guess. I should give feedback less and consoom more then! XD
TBF, I'm okay with tame kinks.
I don't think he's trying to tell you to "shut up and consoom more". I think the person you're replying to is mostly just complaining about the type of people who ask for things that are not simply rehashes of existing games but then shit on any new game/developer when their product is not up to the quality of existing games in the genre and expecting that their game should either be perfect (or at least better than everything currently on the market) or it shouldn't exist at all. You are probably not someone who is asking for innovation in the porn game sector so his rant probably doesn't apply to you.
Success is relative, given the initial reception, this game had the kind of start most devs could only dream of and they dropped the ball hard. If someone like Dr Pinkcake or NLT had been behind the wheel of making game after that kind of start, it likely would have been a huge boon for the adult gaming scene. If Subverse was actually popular with its customers, a lot more of them would be fans.
At first I was going to agree with you, but as I thought about the comment more, I'm leaning more towards having to disagree with you on this one. While I agree with you that experienced developers having the funding that Studio FOW got in their Kickstarter might be more likely to make a game that would be seen as a huge boon for the adult gaming scene, I disagree with your example developers.
First, let's try to come up with the definition of a "huge boon". For the sake of argument, let's just say a huge boon would be considered as a larger-than-expected number of new adult-game players that like the game so much they start looking into other games in the "adult game" landscape and decide to play those as well. There will always be growth in the industry unless people stop making games, but in this context, I would say that a boon would be if the growth exceeded expectations. So ask yourself, would a developer getting more money cause that?
Next you should look at the type of games currently popular in the western adult game space. While there are many different engines used, the two most commonly used engines for western adult game developers are Ren'Py and RPG Maker. Yes, there are other very popular adult games that don't use those engines, but you can't tell me that the majority of western adult games aren't made in Ren'Py or RPG Maker. Those are likely the most popular because most of the assets needed to make the game are already built into the engines which is a huge boon to new, aspiring developers since this gives them the leeway to focus on other parts of the game. With the developer(s) only needing to focus on a few aspects of the game, they can rely on their strengths to make the game a success rather than having to work on the stuff that they may not be as good at making. But herein lies the problem: Ren'Py is mostly used to make visual novels and RPG Maker is mostly used to make JRPGs. How would more money affect those types of products?
Third, let's look at the developers of western adult games. Let's take the two you mentioned: NLT and Dr. Pinkcake. I don't mean to pick on them, but they're perfect examples for this because one makes games using Ren'Py and the other uses RPG Maker. Given their track record, I'm fairly certain that the games they make will be very popular, and who knows, they may even provide that huge boon to the adult gaming scene you mentioned. But would it be because of the money? Additionally, based on their Patreon pages, I assume they are solo developers. They might have a small team that works with them, but that would be the extent of it: a
small team. What would more money solve for them? Individuals can only do so much work in a single day and I don't think going from ~$65,000 a month to a $2,000,000 lump sum is going to increase the monthly output quality (unless they're somehow intentionally sandbagging the quality of the games to hold out for more money). Dr. Pinkcake's bio says that his computer is processing renders all day every day. Let's assume he isn't over exaggerating the workload his computer is handling, money wouldn't help with that. The computer wouldn't magically be better if he had more money. Sure, he could get a new computer that was faster, or multiple computers to render multiple scenes at the same time, but would that change the quality of his work? Or just the speed? He could pay for quality upgrades as well, but that only costs so much money for a small operation. A one-time payment for the processing software (or maybe a monthly/yearly subscription fee), but again, if $65,000 a month isn't enough to spring for better quality, what is? Hiring voice actors or more developers/sound designers/ etc. wouldn't really help with this either. A voice cast wouldn't necessarily improve the game. In the first place, the developer would need a lot of experience with dealing with voices to have a decent shot of making it work. Studio FOW has experience with that, so from what I understand, they were able to pull that off well. But for a developer that tried it with 2 characters then axed the idea, they probably don't have the experience to ensure a good performance from everyone they would have to cast. NLT doesn't talk about themself in the bio, mostly their games, so I'm not able to glean as much, but even then, they appear to refer to their operation as being a solo developer. And they're making someone in the ballpark of $30,000 - $60,000, so the same questions apply to them. RPG Maker games actually have gameplay in them, but people could argue that, unless the gameplay is either balanced extremely well, or left by the wayside, then the gameplay is also grindy. Also, you can only do so much within the confines of those engines.
In conclusion, just randomly giving popular, established adult game developers the same amount of money as Studio FOW got would absolutely not allow them to make a better game than what Studio FOW is currently making.
Everything is polished AF! They obviously paid for a very nice game and good voice actors and all the bells and whistles. I just couldn’t get into it because of the awful dialogue and humor. Like ppl said before, if we want to play this type of game, it’s better to just play x-com.
Why not create sex animations within the combat instead of separating it completely. Like what modders are trying to do to regular games. Make kind of like… an ADULT GAME?
Game combat that involves sex, while enjoyable if done correctly, isn't required to make a game (with combat) an adult game. I always cite this as a reference, but Sengoku Rance, or many of the games in the Rance series, is my number one example for not needing sex as part of the gameplay loop to make a great adult game. You may not like the Rance series, but you can't deny that it has its fans. And, surprisingly, a good portion of them play Sengoku Rance for the gameplay first and the sex second. There is enough variety in the gameplay that you can come up with all sorts of viable, winning strategies to complete the game with.
