Getting things back on track...

Just noting that, over at Daz3D.com there are some pretty decent discount stacking in two of the sales currently going on (Serpentine & Wish, also Cinco). The buy-ins are still pretty steep, but I'm seeing a number of legacy items under $1 before tokens in the Serpentine sale.

Depending on how many items that interest you in the Serpentine sale, may or may not be worth it. Since it's a double tokens day, that may help if you are looking to recharge your tokens.

The weekly mid-week coupon is 25% off this week over at Renderosity:

Time for Midweek Bliss Savings -- Take 25% off your order of $25+ with code MWBLISS25 at checkout. Coupon valid until Thursday 5/09/2025, 12:00 PM (CDT). Coupon is stackable on other promotions but may not apply to all products.

Might pay to wait for the midweek 65% off if prime sale that usually gets posted on Wednesdays, since the coupon is good through Thursday. If you are looking for new peeps for your virtual squad, there's a 60% off a bunch of characters sale today, including this dude...

full_167e8be46677b1d3aa9460f9a528c5d4.jpg

I think that this is the only outfit available for him though...
:p

Might be an interesting companion choice for a G8F sporting these....

Although Three Tits is not currently on sale. Good luck strapping genitals onto the Deosian...

As noted, the character sale is only good for today, but there will be a similar 60% off sale tomorrow, it's anyone's guess what the theme will be.

Daz is doing another one of those "rotating every 4 hours" sales that we all hate.

Sometimes they do a catch-up sale where all the items from the entire day are on sale for the last 4 hours, so you might wait for that. No guarantees though.

1746606384407.png

The "70% off up to any 5 items" of course means "any 5 items FROM THIS SALE", which I guess is supposed to be obvious but I didn't realize at first. (It's clearer in the above image, but less clear in the rotating banner image).

The 70% off will stack with any other discounts besides this 60%, so you can get to 79% if something's already 30% off.

Daz forum mod has verfied that yes, it's any new release. There are a bunch of $4.19 and $4.99 New Releases that are Daz Originals and 70-80% off (so another 45% discounted with 8 tokens).

Even with 8 tokens and mostly Daz Originals, the best I could get to was around $3/item average. Your mileage may vary.

Joy...

Over at Daz3D.com... it looks like, at least for me, that lightning deals are now locked at 72%. So, boring...

Also, when I was putting together a cart for the Serpentine sale yesterday, a number of legacy/older items that should have been cheaper than $2 were locked at a $2 minimum. Not all items, but a number of them. So apparently the $2 minimum thing is still a thing in some cases, whether it's mentioned or not.

On another note, is it just me, or are the Renderosity product thumbnails more interesting/helpful/nice looking? I particularly like that for the characters, we get decent head shots, all in a similar format for the thumbnails at least. And the other products, well it seems a tiny bit more clear what the thumbnail is advertising (prop/environment/poses/character/hair), although that may just be me... I may just be burned out after looking at Daz3D.com product thumbnails over and over while playing Daz3D.com cart jenga all these years...

Today's 65% off with prime sale at Renderosity seemed to have a number of items that I hadn't noticed being included recently in the sale mix, so might be worth a looksee at least.

Other sales are currently running of course:

Not sure what's going on elsewhere, here's the sales listings for Renderotica:

Looks like Layla's store is 50% off, unfortunately Meipe is ony 20% off (Dicktator, etc.). A lot of the sales listings aren't immediately clear as to what the discount is until you click on the associated sale link.

Mostly though, just noting that lightning deals at Daz3D.com got boring again (72% off), at least for me.

Surprise surprise... Not at all. As expected, looking at some posts on Daz's fora seems to indicate that the plugins that are not coming with Daz or its "premium" subscription will cease to work with 2025, there is no retrocompatibility.
Scripts may or may not work, though notice Daz did say they also updated the scripting engine, which can mean also breaking the compatibility of at some scripts.

That sounds like a fast way for Daz to push people to buy the Premium subscription, put under the cover and justification of using a greater and later version (latest and greatest sells well :)) of the interface framework libraries.
Lots of people did not go to premium because the plugins they had already still worked even with 4.23 (I ame on of those) and probably 4.24 (still same base software) and made no economic sense to go premium to replace something already paid and bought with something that is a subscription and will stop working the moment you stop the subscription.

People say that in theory a simple recompilation could be enough to have the plugin compatible.
However, for plugins like mesh grabber, that Daz actually acquired to put it under "premium", even if the author wanted to update them, it is possible and even probable that DAZ would not allow it.

Also, two cents from an IT person, although I admit I do not work for Daz and never saw their code, the list of their development tool, their development approach and software roadmap, only the public information and what can be deduced from what they did in the years, so I may (hopefully) still be wrong.
"Recompiling is enough" works only if the APIs from the application side and library functions used by the plugins are still the same and with the same "interface" (not user-facing, program/plugins facing ), or at least, still support also "legacy" calls - Daz said they have rewritten part of the application and have rewritten the interface to use new libraries (though the ones they mention are not proprietary, is a framework that is used by many, especially if they want to create applications that have similar interface on Windows and Linux or MacOSX).
In those conditions, it is highly probable that the plugins will require at least partial rewriting, which typically means another license to buy.
In reality, even if it was really a "recompiling", it would be up to the author to decide whether to recompile and make available as update for the ones that have it already (well, OK, of course, the ones that bought it, like of course we all did for all the plugins :p :-D), or if anybody wanting to use it will need to buy a new license.

So, obvious suggestion but maybe not, when 2025 will be released fully, for people that have plugins and similar they use, it is better to continue for a long time keeping 4.x with its plugins installed and working in parallel to 2025, as it has been discussed is perfectly possible.
As far as I remeber, Daz 2025 does not use a new file format, maybe Daz 2026 (?) or 2027 (?) or whatever they will be called will do it, but even then, the first version that change the format will need forcibly to be able also to open the previous formats, to avoid telling people they have to throw away all the scenes they did in the past.
That means it will still be possible to use 4.x with the plugins to create the files, if you need the functionalities of the plugins, and then open them in 2025 (or whatever future version) if e.g. needed for some other functions or because the rendering works better, or whatever else. Also, if at some point in the future (DAZ 2026, 2027 or whatever) DAZ were eventually (no real good technical reason, but never mind that) to drop completely support for loading V4, G3 and even G8 and G81 assets, it could be possible to use the old 4.x to convert as many as possible to G9 and avoid having to rebuy everything.

A future Windows 12 or 13 could break the scenario by breaking the software compatibility, but one of the points Microsoft did well in the past and allowed it to reach the situation in which it is (if one count mobile phones, that skews the statistics, but if one looks at computer, Windows is still the most diffused OS by a long margin), was exactly the fact one could continue to use software they had already with new OS versions (partial exceptions, the passage from 32 bit to 64 bit os, and the more diffused exception, hardware drivers), so, since 4.x still works under Windows 11, it should work even with a future 12 or maybe even 13, even though already since Windows 10 MS considers it an "online service".

Another noob question. If i want to create VN with daz, do i need to pay for assets?
Free assets overused at projects?

Scripts may or may not work, though notice Daz did say they also updated the scripting engine, which can mean also breaking the compatibility of at some scripts.
I have a lot of scripts that I wrote myself and from my initial testing compatibility seems good. Also the coming changes to the scripting engine are really overdue, the javascript syntax in Daz Studio 4 has some really ugly warts.

Of course small changes can still break existing scripts by PAs who will have very little incentive to update them (and rather make a new version to sell).

Another noob question. If i want to create VN with daz, do i need to pay for assets?
Free assets overused at projects?
This is a bit complicated. I'll attempt to keep this succinct...

Various assets have usage rights. The free sites usually have the usage rights included, which fall into a number of categories.

'Personal Use only' usually means that you can't use said assets in a VN that you offer for sale directly or inderictly, via Patreon or whatever, as this is considered a 'commercial use'. Even 'for free' projects may have issues with 'personal use only' assets.

Assets that are based on IPs, say a Batmobile or whatever, may get you into trouble with the IP owners if said assets are used without permission from the IP holder. These assets again are often listed as 'Personal Use Only', so might be worthwhile to avoid.

Free assets that are listed as 'Commerical Use allowed' you should be able to use in your projects without issue.

Daz3d.com free assets are usually fine to use in a VN, where you get into trouble is if you are importing the actual model meshes (instead of just a 2D Daz render) into say Unreal Engine or something. Usage of the model meshes themselves in a game engine requires a special license. 2D renders (i.e. .jpg, .png, etc) can be used all day long though without issue.

Some Daz3d.com assets now have 'editorial licenses', which is similar to 'Personal Use only'. This isn't very common, but often comes up with assets that are based on things seen in someone else's IP, say Star Trek/Star Wars/Battlestar Galactica/etc.

However, if you acquire an asset by other means, say on a sharing site, that is usually a 'paid' asset, yeah that may eventually get you into trouble (ymmv). Along these lines, some people use the 'try before you buy' approach here, purchasing said assets when they can afford them down the road if their game/VN takes off, usually when they go on sale.

Along this train of thought, there are so many VNs these days that it's not easy for asset creators to track where their assets are being used, so this falls under the 'do you feel lucky/how far do you want to push your luck' train of thought if you use a paid asset that is acquired by other means. This also applies to 'personal use only' assets. The creator of said 'personal' asset may or may not be paying attention/may not be worth their time, so ymmv. If you share the actual 3D asset though, rather than a 2D render with said asset included, this may get their attention...

The final question is how often is IP enforced. This is very much a YMMV situation. An interesting example of this is a number of games shared on F95Zone (hand drawn or otherwise) based on the DC universe. Some game designers are able to get away with this to a point, but if the IP holder is particularly anal, this could cause you some grief. Best idea is to not wade into these waters, but some choose to do so anyways. Which country you currently live in may also be a consideration, as different countries have different levels of IP enforcement, and the penalties can vary depending on the subject of your game.

If you are just trying to tell a story of your own creation using Daz3D assets in say Ren'Py though, yeah as long as you are mindful of the usage rights you shouldn't have much issue. I've heard stories of people that share games on say Patreon getting grief occasionally, requiring them to demonstrate that they are the 'copyright holder' for the game in question, and that they have authorization to use the assets they use, but this is usually pretty rare, unless you piss off a patron that then 'turns you in' to the Patreon police to cause you headaches. People on the internet get vengeful sometimes...

So be mindful when engaging with patrons, forum peeps, etc., but that's just internet common sense stuff.

---

As to your question about re-using assets, some assets (locations, hairstyles, outfits, etc.) are re-used often in VNs, so don't let this worry you to much. As for characters, there are a few 'rather popular' character assets in VNs. I like to think of character assets as actors that you 'hire' for your story, which is why you see say George, Victoria, Russel, and a few others used in a number of VNs. I actually started a thread about this, but the thread never took off...

https://f95zone.to/threads/popular-daz-studio-virtual-actors-and-actresses-in-adult-games.87173/

You can use character morphs to modify a character's appearance though, as do using different hairstyles, and mix and match character shapes to a degree in Daz Studio, which can help 'mitigate' this issue. But I'm 'good' with the 'actor being hired for your story' logic myself...

Some character head/body morphs are available for free, particularly for G3F and G8F if you know where to look. Say the Sickleyield free morphs...

In my mind, re-using assets you've seen in other games is fine, as long as the story you are choosing to tell is compelling. Then people will tend to ignore re-usage of the assets. If your story is just a 'generic rehash' of stuff often seen in Games/VNs though, yeah people will call this out when criticizing your game. A small handful of people will criticize your VN/Game regardless, but if your story is compelling and interesting to people that choose to check it out, your 'fans' should outweigh the occasional trolls or whatever.

---

Finally, if you see a 'paid' asset that you like, wishlist it for later when you can afford to buy it, and try to wait for it to go on sale with a decent discount instead of paying 'full price'. Which is what this thread is for.

On another note, I'm rather interested to see someone attempt to make a VN using completely 'legally for free' assets, mainly to show that it can be done. There's actually a pretty good selection of free assets out there, the key is to use them creatively in your story. If nothing else, this is a good excuse to learn the ins and outs of Daz Studio, and also free VN storytelling engines, say Ren'Py. I'm sure a few creators featured here on F95Zone have already done this (visualizing a story using only free assets), but there are literally thousands of games featured on F95Zone, so it's easy to get lost in the shuffle, and why I'm not aware of said projects.

Hope that this helps!

Daz has a Flash Sale, 3 items for 20% off with coupon, DOES apply to Gift Cards. It stacks with the other deal, bringing the nominal discount to 20% + 15% = 32% (Daz math). These days, I think 30%-35% is about the best you can expect, so this is decent except it's still a big buy-in.

Here's the actual numbers assuming you apply the 20% off coupon.

Edited: minor correction, because I only applied the 20% off to the GCs, and not the buy-ins

Corrected with coupon applied to buy-ins (not quite right for $1000, since two cards means only one buy-in gets the 20% off):

1746833419818.png

This is the old wrong version where I forgot to apply the coupon to the buy-in, just so you can see the difference it makes:

Daz flash sale (good until Daz midnight):

1746944863655.png

There's about 25,000 items in this sale, or about 1/3rd of the store.

To find the cheapest New Releases, .

There's a few New Release items for $3.50-$5. So the 80% deal is decent.

With 8 tokens you can do pretty well. There are some New-Release Daz-Original items that are 78% off for $4.19 without tokens. With 8 tokens they're $2.31 (88% off). That puts the total buy-in at $4.62 for the 80%-off deal, and the effective discount with those tokens will be 80%+30% = 86% off 20 items, 92% off if they're Daz Originals (there's about 8000 of those, you can use the Artist filter to select).

BTW, for anyone who doesn't understand how Daz Math works, suppose an item with list price of $1 has both 80% and 25% applied. 80% off brings the $1 down to 20 cents. 25% off that brings it down to 15 cents, or 85% off. So effectively, 80% + 25% = 85%. (You'll get the same answer if you do them in the other order.)

Return of the "70% off any 10 items from a list of 21,000 with any New Release over $1" sale on Daz. It's not 80%, though. But my previous notes a few posts back about Daz Originals and 8 tokens largely apply. And since it doesn't require a coupon, you can presumably repeat this sale for as many carts as you have cheap New Releases you're willing to use as buy-ins.

Just in case you are not clear on how this works:

It is the top 3 Qualifying* Items in your cart, regardless of their position;
so organise your purchase accordingly
It appears to stack, and tokens apply

* Excludes New Releases, Memberships, Gift Cards, Items already owned.

Edit: NEVERMIND, they disabled stacking

TL;DR: Just read the colored text.

Daz's "Choose 3" deal from yesterday where the first three items were 50% off had a problem: the 50% stacked with existing discounts, but the set of products that had existing 60%+ discounts to stack with was pretty small.

Today there's a wishlist deal that changes that dynamic. You can get 1/3/5 wishlisted items for 0/1/2 buy-ins for 60%/70%/75% off.

You can combine those for: get 3 items at 70%+50% = 85% off 3 wishlist items with 2 buy-ins.

That's still a huge buy-in cost, but this could be a good option to finally get those expensive items or bundles that never go deeply on sale out of your wishlist. Here's a sample cart (which includes Daz Originals for extra savings):

View attachment 4837670

HM Nhix Demon Hunter's true "recent best" is actually around $30, the $18.6 above is the storewide glitch from 2025-02-28 that makes most "recent best" for products useless.

So this is bringing 3 items worth $280, combined recent best of $95, down to $34, PLUS the buy-in cost. (Obviously not a great per-item price unless they're bundles.)

Since no coupons are involved, you can repeat this deal in multiple carts (tested & verified) if you have a LOT of expensive wishlisted items and are willing to keep finding more new buy-ins.

And, here it is with 8 tokens:

View attachment 4837684

Full cart price here is $39, so if you think the buy-ins are worth $5 each, that's an effective price of about $30 for $270 worth of bundles.

Ideally you'd leverage the buy-ins in some other sales, but there aren't many.

View attachment 4837785

If you wishlisted any of yesterday's new releases, you can also use the wishlist sale to buy 2 expensive items PLUS yesterday's wishlisted new-release as the other buy-in, a deeply discounted buy-in (plus today's buy-in).
  • 70% wishlist sale: today's buy-in, plus two expensive wishlist items and one new release from yesterday
  • 50% Choose sale: yesterday's buy-in again, plus same two expensive items, and slot unused
That looks like this on the left (still with tokens):

View attachment 4837729 View attachment 4837749

Note that the bottommost item, the $2.79 Sundress, is the buy-in for the 50% Choose deal, so that's become a cheap buy-in.

At this point you add one more thing on-sale somewhere to your cart to get the extra 50% off on it. Maybe something 72% off from a lightning sale, or today's artist sale (which is supposed to be 65% or 60%, but were briefly incorrectly listed as $0.60 each, ruining the 'recent best'), or something from today's robots sale (since you get 60% off since you already have the buy-in for it); an example is shown above on the right. With 8 tokens that's a $27 cart, including buy-ins, with $250 list-price of stuff plus the value of the buy-ins, for an average discount of about 90%.

All carts for demonstration purposes only. Buy-ins are always tagged with the green "new" icon. Total cart prices do not include sales tax. The HTML was modified before taking screenshots to remove the "Add 3d printing license" and "Add interactive license" checkboxes for easier reading. The frequent use of 8 tokens does not mean the author is a fan of the token system, but since tokens now last two weeks they find they have tokens lying around more often.
I actually did acceptably well from the wishlist deal: 2 New Releases, + 5 WI from Buy-in + 1 WI with coupon and 8 Tokens gave me 81% off the MSRP and 80% off the Sale Price...

I work my purchases on 'cart average'.

Column B: '1' for buy-in items and '0' for wanted items, column C is the lower of 75% or what I am willing to pay, column F is what I'd like to pay if not 75% off ...

Overall, 11% ($5.89) less than what I would have been prepared to pay...

Trick was to add the New Release first then most expensive Wishlist Items in order, then apply the coupon. To maximise the benefit from the coupon the last item was the highest discounted item in my wishlist, the others were the most expensive without sales discount.

Edit: NEVERMIND, they disabled stacking

I actually did acceptably well from the wishlist deal: 2 New Releases, + 5 WI from Buy-in + 1 WI with coupon and 8 Tokens gave me 81% off the MSRP and 80% off the Sale Price...
Yep, depending on the current prices, the 5 wishlist items with 2 buy-ins can be the best.

I only recommended the stacking discounts if you have expensive items on the wishlist that you're tired of waiting to be on sale. I originally just posted to point out that the deal on "any 3 items" and the deal on "any 3 wishlisted items" fit together really well, that kind of deal synergy is rare on Daz.

...

Ok, I went through and collected a bunch of data. Here's the results I estimated:
  • The 75% deal is optimal around $17-$25 average wishlist item price
  • Use the 70% deal for < $17 average wishlist item price
  • Use the 70% deal AND the 50% deal for > $25 average wishlist item price
These are based on the current prices listed on the store page, not the list price, since all these deals should stack on the current price, and assuming you get $5 of value from each buy-in.

Of course, those are just averages. If you have exactly 4 wishlist items you want to buy, then 70% for 3, plus the coupon, might be ideal. If you have exactly 6 wishlist items you want to buy, then 75% for 5 plus the coupon might be ideal, regardless of the naive math used for the recommandations.

Here's the math behind the above recommendations if you care.

Apparently there was some kind of glitch where you could get items from the 60% off sale for 0.60$ instead. So 99% off for most of them. That was fixed but now they also fixed the wishlist sale stacking that orgtech and oaiki mentioned. I had a cart with bundles at >90% off, now they are only 75% off.

EDIT: Someone in the forum pointing out it is the tokens not working, so maybe it'll be fixed.

EDIT2: They added a sentence to the wishlist sale saying it won't stack, so too bad, no sale today for me.
