It's certainly working on me right now, I will have a LOT of these old items. So I guess maybe they want to incentivize me to buy G2 and V4 stuff (there are a lot of texture addons without the clothing).

Either way, all of these G2 items are compatible with VAM, so I guess that makes them useful even though they are kind of crappy. Also, I find you can learn about how stuff is made by looking at older stuff, I guess you could also just pirate them too, but having them in the library is kind of nice.

I am certain that it is a glitch and was not intended to work with freebies. The sale explicitly states

But of course, these ain't the most recent and top notch assets and some reshading may be required. But some the envs can be very useful if only for kitbashing, some clothing are quite nice (at that period there was an artist at daz that created some very sexy dresses), v4-g2 hair is very light and I use them frequently on distant chars.
Probably nothing worth buying full (or even half)-price, but you can find useful stuff.

For kitbashing scenes I use free obj/fbx/blender from different sites (sketchup, cgtrader and so on).

Needs a little bit time and knowledge to get them into daz (I'm far away from being a blender pro!) but gives much more better quality (after applying iray/pbr shaders). The xx years old cars they have on the Daz deal ... Yeah, they were great at that time, but now I would only use them in the background with a lot of DOF
There are much better for animations or background at DMI.

G2 hair on distance characters ... Right. But I would need G2 clothes, poses and so on.
So I take a G8, use scene optimizer and decimator on thefigure ... and get better looking characters without more gpu load

Perhaps some people like these old models, but it's just nothing I need nor want.

If you have a use for them, go get them

I checked VAM ... not working for me.
And G2/V4 ... it's just nothing I would use for my projects.

But If you have a use for it ... get everything you can!

My experience is different. The new freebies do not seems to qualify for a GC discount.
They do not qualify either for PCFAD 5-15% discount.

BUT, they do qualify for the free item

Just need to buy either the two new freebies or the free PC+ anniversary pack to get a free item.
And you can do that many times (and I am not 100% certain that it was really intended ).

You only need to "buy" one free item. Then it's rinse and repeat. I got about 24 free goodies (props and locations) cuz the old models, hair, and clothing are to problematic. I'd do more, but I have work to do.

Ok, in the interests of science, I tested it, and it works. First time around, purchase the flooring shaders first, then select the item from Contemporary Items. Billing shows at $.57 and that is what it bills my gift card for. Round 2. Purchase the flooring shaders first. It says purchased, so I click on purchased and it adds it to the cart. Then I go pick my second item from the contemporary items list. Total of cart is $0.57. Billed my gift card balance at $0.57. BTW, the sale is definitely not supposed to to work that way. The purchase is supposed to be any $1 or more new release. It is working, for now. I already tapped that sale and got most of what I wanted out of it, so this was just an exercise for mere morbid curiosity (and to grab a few food-related assets as well, while I was at it).

To put it on sale for 2.99 ... that's a joke.

Don't misunderstand me:
It's a great asset, if you want to build a city ... WITH 3DS.
Or invest 2 weeks to port it to iray.

3DS or Gen1/2 models in sales are a joke and only intended to milk customers who don't know what they are buying.
I really like the dreamlight envs/HDRIs, but putting this on sale (don't know if the PAs have a say in it) makes me think about buying dreamlight EVER again.

About buying at the daz store .... I don't think I have to explain my thoughts.
I'll be spending my credit, use my "Daz+" (oh, there was this great change to Daz+ .... anybody noticed something?) new "perks" .... and that's it.

What comes next?

G9 (after 8.1 was a complete failure) with paid Daz subscriptions in Daz 5? Because that's how to sell software, as you can see with office, PS and so on.

So, $2.99 catchup PC+ for a day aside (should be $1.99 but not unexpected...), it looks like the $2.99 BYOB categories have been lumped together into a mega category with over 3000 items. Might be worth a looksee if you were like me and had a few strays but not enough in each BYOB to come up with 8 items you wanted, or just haven't bothered with BYOB yet.

BTW, you'll need to do each batch of 8 BYOB items in a separate cart. Just tried putting 16 BYOB items in my cart, everything was still 'full price'...

As for the rest of the sale, more of the same, meh...

These "historical" items were all part of the super BYOB last week-end and were sold for $.37 ($2.99 for 8). Most are very old. Some can still be nice, but daz should rather call them fossils than "historical items".
