I know, I ask a lot, not that much as JJJ84, but no dragons, no unicorn, no Floaty, so next best is the mens best friend and next best to this is this doggy.
My guess is, a lot of people talked about the dog and asked for his/her inclusion from these forums as well as discord probably.
But regardless, should the dog gets included in the main game somehow, it would no doubt be one of very welcome additions I admit.
If this dog is a he, don't know why but I somehow would find it hilarious if it has somewhat similar personality to our MC here. A loner by nature unless he gets approached by others (whether other dogs or humans), but loves to flirt with all females of any species (whether it's other dogs, or humans for that matter), resulting in funny situations with Luna, Gracie, and Isabel

MC disciplines the dog after he/she makes a big mess in his room:
MC: "No! Bad dog!"
Dog: (growls at MC initially in annoyance and instantly runs off somewhere)
MC: Hey! Where are you going! I'm not finished with you!"
Dog: (Whines sadly to Luna & Gracie)
Luna: What's wrong boy/girl? Is your daddy being grumpy again?
Luna: Hope! Stop being grumpy to (insert dog name)!
Gracie: Yeah Hope! Stop being bad to (inset dog name)!!
MC: (pointing at the mess of the room) Look what he/she did!
Luna: (totally ignoring MC, petting the dog): You're the best boy/girl aren't you? Yes you are, yes you are!!
Gracie: (also totally ignoring MC, petting the dog): Awwww...... he/she's rolling around wagging the tail again!!! So adorable!
MC: (shaking his head) I give up.
Not as funny as I would have liked, but one of possible scenarios of what might happen in-house lol.

1) a mission going all pear shaped until Floaty floats in and bails us all out
2) a mission going all pear shaped until Floaty floats in but gets overwhelmed, but then Doggo comes in, acting all cute, getting bellyrubs from the bad guys, they let their guard down, whoopsie, bloodbath
(only for those who befriended him of course, for everybody else it's game over)

Some do think so and have voiced this opinion in the past. Others countered that it might be the most realistic, down to life part of the whole game. In the end everybody has their own opinions but a dev's gotta do what a dev's gotta do.
(Personally: I could have done without it but it did make me chuckle)

It did nothing for me, in of itself. Elicited a smirk, probably.
But, reading here and witnessing people provide frequent enactment and further inspiration for the character, it makes me laugh more, after the event.
Filius event itself - jokes, but whatever.

While it didn't add anything to the actual story, I'm not gonna lie. It did make me laugh.
And seeing the real-life Filiuses coming to the forum being really salty about it all just added more humour to the whole thing
Heh, didn't really find it funny. Felt kinda like the developers lowering themselves to the level of (unpaying) complainers.

lol I'd argue that their complaints don't generally have any substance & they are not funny, either.
At least this was/is a valid complaint & was mildly amusing.
Problem lies, as you say, in the purpose.
Mockery is a form of acknowledgement & anyone who gets the point is already aware of these types of people & what dullards they are.
Anyone who doesn't get the point is not going to take it onboard, anyway. So it's simply the dev sticking a middle finger up.

People expect devs to have a higher standard. That is what we are used to not only with gaming companies but with all kinds of companies. That is because of revenue, company brand, investors, public opinion, and so on.
