There is a way to tell if he's Dad is not corrupted.
The son could go to the police department and file a complaint against his Dad's Boss to take him out that assignment. He could also sue the department and win.
Unless they know nothing about it and like I said his Dad is full of BS.
Probably owes them money and he made up all that BS to pay them off.

You are overthinking this way too much, and forgetting a very simple thing. In reality, there's no way a cop would be allowed to take his family with him undercover.
