You also even have on the Relationships screen a statement whether a girl is in the harem, so it will be clear to the player.
Just restarting this and is the harem forced or can we still pick and choose?

Zero need for you to be condescending to the lad. In fairness the game at least at the start presents a legit concern about playing with too much fire as its clearly set that old king daddy will have you hung drawn and quartered should you touch his girls hence all the secrecy, most of the girls vehemently oppose the very idea of you being with certain other girls given quarrels and rivalries and the game even bad scenarios at some of them finding out they are not your sole love interest.
Naturally as the game progresses you feel certain "higher powers" have your back on the harem front without getting castrated in the process but as he openly admits he is new here it's pretty certain he both hasn't progressed far into the story.

As long as I remember correctly, we always have a choice whether we want to be with someone or not.
Noted the Relationships screen was updated (or is that downdated?) so that……degree of affection for MC by each girl no longer displays. Tried UnRen .91 and it’s unable to do its thing; can’t find the python.exe. Would another version of UnRen work?

I'm pretty sure you can choose. From what I can remember, every potential LI will have a choice where you can decide to include them or not. It's not worded that way per se, but I think it should be clear. Worst case: Save when there's a menu, make your choice, and then check the Relationships and see if it added them to your harem. That means saving several times, but you can always delete / overwrite saves you don't want to keep as well ofc.
