the sad part is, this project was doomed from the start.

this would never come even close to its target promisses, because there were too many, and the game was a jumbled mess.
now, this could still deliver something great, if only they focused on something, instead of trying to do everything at once.

if anything, i hope developers start to realize that, while it may sound nice to promisse the moon, and every other celestial body in existance, it would do them well to just go for one thing at a time, and work it enough before moving on to the next target.

this game had alot of promisse, but the convoluted vision and unfocused design really made it something that would never deliver.

I'm really hoping this isn't abandoned, I picked it up on Steam around the beginning of the year without any knowledge of the development issues and enjoyed what I played. I was getting annoyed by how the most recent update on the Steam page was from December, and then happened to stumble upon it on here and saw the abandoned tag. Glad to see it's not officially abandoned, yet, and that it's just people assuming it is based on the lack of content. I guess I'll stay hopeful that I didn't waste my money, because I actually really enjoyed the game.

It's not the lack of content, it's the lack of communication and evidence of the game being worked on for the past X amount of months. If you're wondering why the site tags games as abandoned, it's because some developers straight up ghost or lie about working on the game. The tag is not meant to be a slight against the developer, it exists to help people filter out games in development that haven't shown signs of life in a long time.

If you're referring to the abandoned tag, that won't go away until a new version of the game is posted. Doesn't matter what a developers says or shows off, the only things that gets rid of that tag is a playable update.

Anyway, since this is a game thread, about a game, have those screenshots and artworks the developer shared on their discord recently (along with the developer commentary that happened at the same time):

Again, since this is a game thread, about a game, have some more neat info about the game:

The other day, I mentioned the game had a built-in modding API. While that's not functional, the game itself is actually fairly easy to mod for those who want to do it. Some basic information on the subject:

  • The game's data is stored in the jar file, specifically "Venture Seas/bin/VentureSeas.jar"
  • A jar file is just a zip file with a different name. Just use a tool like winrar or 7zip to extract it, and you can use the same tool to replace edited files in the existing jar.
  • There's a lot of stuff inside the archive. Ignore everything but the "character" and "data" folders.
  • Most data for the game is stored as ".tsv" files. These are tab-separated spreadsheets, and can be loaded into excel or google sheets for easier editing.
  • The "character" folder contains a folder for every prefab folder in the game. You can add new characters if you add a new numbered folder and edit info.tsv accordingly. Do not skip a number. The game will crash if you do.
  • The data folder contains scenes, towns, dungeons, items, and everything else. Very little of this is safe to edit without also editing the game's code.
  • You can change the contents of a shop safely.
  • You can add new scenes to existing towns and dungeons safely.
  • You might be able to add new ship scenes safely, I'd have to double-check.
  • You cannot add new towns, new dungeons, new music, or new backgrounds safely. The game will crash and/or corrupt save data without appropriate edits to the code.
  • You can add new races and edit the features of existing ones using racegen.tsv.
  • There is a reference file somewhere that explains the event script system. It might be script.tsv, but I don't have it available to double-check at the moment.
So with all of those restrictions, why bother? Because you can add new scenes and encounters to towns and dungeons, and with some careful playing around that can add up to a lot of content very quickly.
