I have fully restored the Magic Eye and and spoken to Agatha in order to have Meryl wandering my lab and able to be called to battle.

I do not have a BJ option when I visit her.

Is this a bug for me, or is there a hidden requirement I have not met?

Depends on your timezone. I expect it tomorrow.
Until now saves from previous versions have been compatible.

Worse than just RPG Maker, one of the old version of it (VX Ace, I believe).
But the game is definitely worth to play it! Start without walkthrough, try to go as far as possible without hints and cheats — the game at first gives a very pleasant feeling of exploration, but then fails — soon you will get tired of not understanding how to succeed or what to do next, so then you can play with the walkthrough. It's still very fun to play, even with the walkthrough!
