Yes, we do & I used this logic, not because I necessarily agreed with it but because it was used as a reply to me, in a situation where I'd made a criticism about the prescence of gratuitous snuff porn in a well-rendered story, as opposed to someone's death as an integral part of a plot.

i'm not considering myself as you call them neo-puritans who are against blackmail per se. blackmail as trigger on falling path is often logical explanation of story. but i'm against stupid, riddiculous, childish blackmails which were at one point standard part of every fem protagonist corruption games. like devs didn't want spending time on developing story that have sense or they couldn't do better because lacking of minimum writing talent or life experience.
agree (as with almost everything else you written in that post) that we shouldn't tell the author how to tell his story, but we have full right to say what we are thinking about results.
