It's much more reliable if you decode the data.wolf and replace the files inside said data folder. Plus, uncensored capture animations if you have that folder.
You're supposed to have that within your game folder upon obtaining since it's an integral file to the game before it gets decoded. If you don't... I have no idea what happened.

If you downloaded the patch from this thread, that's normal. This thread is ONLY for the patch, and doesn't have a download link for the full game.
Rename basicdata.wolf and mapdata.wolf (I just put an underscore at the end). Put the folders with the same name from the patch in the data folder. Now the game should read from those folders instead.
Hmm, it's working for me even if I name them like that. Is that file from the error missing in basic data folder?

I think I see the problem now. You need to extract mapdata.wolf and basicdata.wolf files. Use the dxadecode program linked in the op on those two files, which should create a relative folder. Move that into your data folder, then copy the patch over them. You should end up with something like this
Mapdata folder has 93 files for me.
