S2E4 Trial Walkthrough Option

Hey, all. Short update: thanks to a lovely, wonderful person on F95Zone, I was able to get the Trials Walkthrough Option working. This is for those who either don't want to deal with minigames or who failed a few times and want the right answers. This is in order to reduce frustration and keep the game moving smoothly, as several people have expressed that these minigames killed the game for them, and even more expressed that they found the Trials to be unpleasant to play through.

The team is currently testing it, but it'll be rolling out as soon as we've all run through it in patch 1.4.0.3. It'll be something you can toggle on in the Options menu.

I'm also working on a Roadmap graphic that will show each upcoming patch up through the end of the Main Story and beyond as we flesh out each LI's Side Story. I do love good visuals for things like this and I think you folks would appreciate that, too.

That's all for now. Love you all, and thanks for sticking with us.

[PUBLIC RELEASE] 1.4.0.3 Trials Walkthrough Update

Hey, all!

Got a lot of feedback on this last patch, and one sore point has been the Trials. I know there are a lot of people who play AVNs who don't like minigames, but I wanted to preserve the spirit of the Trials and not commit a ton of dev time to reworking the whole Episode 4, so I settled on one of the suggestions: a Walkthrough update. Thanks to F95Zone user ninjahotsprings for the code to make this work!

Downloads at the bottom of the Itch post:

In the Options menu, you'll find a new radio button:

image_2025-02-20_212304910.png

Enabling this will turn the correct option green. This will lead you through the correct answers to all three Trials.

image_2025-02-20_212249524.png

In my testing, I found that if you're in the middle of a Trial choice menu and decide to open Options and enable the Walkthrough, it won't take effect until the next mouse click. I also noticed that, if you close the game with it Enabled and open it again, it will be Disabled, and I had to reenable it. Not game breaking at all, but I thought I'd mention it.

I hope this helps allay some of the frustration surrounding the Trials. The goal was to create more immersion by putting the player in Aurum's shoes rather than showing it like a cinematic with no choices, and for many, it was appreciated. But for some, it became frustrating and even made some completely drop the game. So I'm hoping this is a good compromise.

Also, thought I might include a cute little preview for the next Side Story patch:

Just finished Season 1, have not followed this game at all, so just wondering how much is planned and "expected" amount of time, like months-year or more?

Hey! The Main Story will have about 4 more episodes. Season 1 had 6 and Season 2 will have 8. After that, we're gonna focus on filling out all the girls' Side Stories until they each have about 20 scenes. From there, we'll see if more Main Story is wanted, or if we'll be focusing on the DLC characters and a new project, Goblin Roommates.

Thanks a lot for reply, really awesome and great to hear.
Do you have any expected idea of time on either of those goals?

I am just curious if it will be like 5 months or year or even longer.

Well, this project started out with me and a coder. Unfortunately, the coder left and I had to learn Ren'py from scratch on my own. For the first year or two, I ended up with a release about every 4 months.

Currently, I lead a team of 4. I still do the majority of the work, but once in a while, I'm able to delegate some things, and we've refined the process. We attempted to do one update per month and that proved to be far too strenuous with the way WCA's visuals are done. Currently, we're aiming for one update every 2 to 3 months. We alternate Main Story updates, such as 1.2.0.0, 1.3.0.0, 1.4.0.0, etc, with Side Story updates, which are 1.2.5.0, 1.3.5.0, 1.4.5.0, and so on. Each Main Story update for the past few has contained an entire episode, and each Side Story update focuses on bringing 4 girls up to 5 Side Story scenes each.

I wish I could give you a schedule, but the WCA doesn't make enough money on SubscribeStar/Patreon for me to quit one of my 2 IRL jobs, so I work on it when I have time. If the support sites ever get to the point where I can replace the income from my lesser paying job, I'd happily quit that job to work on this more. But we'll cross that bridge if we get to it. For now, we'll just keep plugging away whenever we get the chance, and try to stick to our 2-3 month update cycle as much as possible :)

Looks like Ren'Py records persistent variables better than regular ones though if you Enable it then click somewhere to initiate dialogue is should record the change to that variable properly for when they save. Local variables are save specific so it functions like the Quick Menu toggle. You could just change the variable to persistent.walkthrough to deal with this little bug.

For why it doesn't toggle the effect on the fly I'm not so sure as when using the console to change the variable it does do that so some refresh thing is likely not being triggered correctly.

renpy.restart_interaction() doesn't seem to do anything but that should be called anyway when changing a variable through an action.
renpy.reload_script() does work when added to the action but makes for a pretty awkward pause as it saves and reloads the game.
