There is the Notes App that Provides Updates as well as Hints, and also functions as a Kind of Quest-Log. But It does feel like a rather old feature that has not been maintained and updated through the Years.... regardin your Question
cmacleod42, revamping or revitalizing that Feature might be a Way to solve some of the Obscurity Issue, but I can imagine that this would be quite a large amount of Work...
I should aso point out though that I am a little bit of a bad example Case. After the Game presentet itself completely cryptic and incromprehensible to me in the Beginning, I basically played along the Walkthrough and made extensive Use of the Cheat function. But thats to the Point, I guess. While I still like this game a Lot, Its not the best look when I like it despite basically deliberatley having avoided playing it...
Also, tiny Idea just coming to me right now: Sometiomes Locations become available just by triggering Flags, and you cant possibly know there is a new place to go to, let alone from where, if not checking the Map or the Walkthrough. Having a Pop up Notification for when a new Location becomes available for the first Time might halp with Directions a little bit, especially in the earliest Parts of the Game.
