The murder of a wife is a sufficient motive for revenge. Rape was optional. But the developer not only told about it, but also showed it in all its glory. This is his right, I do not argue. But I also conclude that there may be scenes like this in the future, so I don't want to touch this game yet. I will follow further developments in the comments section.

True, rape of a loved one is even worse as most NTR, though it also tends to be a focus in most NTR-genre games.
It is up to a dev what he/she wants to put into a game, but then be not surprised if quite a few players will just drop a game for that however good it is and even more will complain cause hate that scene and knowing it happens cause it hits on negative emotions, even if they might not drop the game for that one scene per se.
On the whole though I think it is not a stretch to put forward that most immersive and romantic players that this game seems to target will hate that rape scene and it would have been much better to put a loving scene between MC and dead wive in after which he remembers she has been killed and show the revenge element that way, without a rapescene. Fits better with targeted players immersive/romantic that now have a negative image that might make them not play the game instead of a positive one that would make them want to play the game. So in a way loss/win now against a win/win if had just left rape scene out and just mentioned her dyeing.
