That is an excellent idea, because most people do wear ear protection at a range. But it may be too late to implement now.

I experienced this as well. Finally got past it by brute force skipping text. I think there is too much animation at that point, which overwhelms video RAM. Took me many tries to blast through.

I tried for around 4 hours and just gave up

AFAIK there is no variable, it's a game-over bad choice. There's a few of those early in the game, but they go away.
