There are a bunch of effects in behavioral economics that describe how people are less critical of things they have invested in (and want to invest in things that are losing value). The same, of course goes in reverse: when people don't feel ownership, they are more critical.although it's curious that there haven't been as many concerns by the guys who are actually paying as there have been here, but anyway.
That line of reasoning blurs quite a bit with piracy, since players do invest time (and thoughtspace) before expressing concerns. That helps make the criticism that is given meaningful, as without a time investment, critics get caught on superficialities. There's also the aspect that if you haven't paid, you've given no feedback - so you're more likely to give your thoughts to anyone willing to listen - whereas voting with your wallet is a simple feedback mechanism (for the sender).
