Has nothing to do with criticism.
It wasn't going great financially and he scrubbed everything.
He even made an online version to make it something like a subscription service, but it didn't work.
Its unfortunate that he abandoned the game as I think he was consistent in delivery, but he wasn't a great writer. NiiChan is a great writer, Icarus definitely not.

Game was abandoned because dev didnt get fast a lot of money from supporting and just ditched project. And not because of a lot of fair critique from actual adults with life experience who played and just expressed themselfs about how stupid and cringe this story was
The game got lots of negative comments, some of them unhinged (people wanting the game to be over in a few scenes with the MC violently murdering the Bitches), but I think it was just the big difference between where the dev got to financially and where thought he could get that discouraged him.

Well, I will be honest, I did not read the thread recently and only found out yesterday that the game is abandoned.
Maybe you guys are right, and it was all financial.
However, the pure vitriol that some people in the forum had for the game was definitely not helping.
I mean just in the 3 posts replying to me... two had negativity in them.
I will never understand this: There were actually some people that enjoyed the game as it was 100%. I don't think the writing was bad. I thought it was excellent. There are a lot of people that thought the same as me that loved the game and understood the game pace and the MC handling of the situation.
I get it, not everyone agrees, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. But holy shit, if you don't like something, leave your post and move on to another game. But you had some posters on here that stuck to this thread like flies to shit. They did not like the game or the MC, but just could not leave the thread. They kept on posting how bad the game was in ad nauseum.
Why stick around and keep on posting in a thread of a game you clearly don't like. It's almost like they are rooting for a game to fail. Why though? A lot of posters on here enjoyed the game. sigh... for me it's just disrespectful to the actual fans of the game.
In anycase...I'm sad this game is abandoned. It was a unique and original story, and I would have liked to see the conclusion.
The characters, including the villains were grey characters with their own motivations, both good and bad.

I don't think the "negativity" had any impact on abandoning the game. After all, dev didn't have to read this topic... He could just ignore it and keep hearing the positive feedback from his patreons, right?

OK, so not going to keep posting on this, but just quickly.
Why stick around? Because it's his game thread.... It's the only link between you and your fans. Who would want to cut that link? The problem is that although there are a lot of people that loves the game (Just read the last pages about people mourning its abandonment) And they post it once or twice. But they get drowned by a number of very loud and constant negative posts... often by the same few people posting over and over and over and over again on how bad the game is.
I mean I take myself as an example. I loved this game, but I do not post here all the time. When there is a new release, I would post and say good update or offer a criticism if I felt something could be raised. But then I would see the same few accounts going on about how bad this game is and how pathetic the MC is. It gets tiring after a while.
In any case... I'm out.
I hope against hope that the dev picks up the game again in the future, despite all the negative Nancys, he had a lot of diehard fans as well. I will say this. Love it or hate it, the game brought out a lot of positive and negative emotions from the fans. That alone tells me the game was on to something.

You can bitch all you want about critique and negative posts being the real or honorable reason to drop game developing, but every sane person see that dude just wanted easy cash by making soap opera with a lot of braindead repetitive drama for green soy boys. In reality dude tried a lot of things to milk/monetize his game and when miracle didnt happen he just dropped and unplugged everything, what shows him as sore loser who betrayed those who supported him morally or/and financially, which already as itself is giant dick move by itself.
But bad of course is users with their critique which hurts dev's fragile feelings. If negative feedback and opinions is enough to stop guy from creating its already a big sign of weakwilled and not trustworthy person. Really though, his behavior matches mc's of his game, same sore whining loser)))

And how is what he wanted to do easy cash? Please enlighten me O God of creations. It seems like you can teach all developers everything about development and how to write a successful game. Did he not do regular updates? How exactly did he milk his supporters?
Reading back I can see that he made a mistake taking the game online... But are you seriously accusing a dev that closed his Patreon and stopped all developing for milking his supporters!? His game did not make enough money for his expectations and going online was obviously his last Hail Mary to try and improve his situation. (It was the wrong way to go, I would agree, but can hardly be called milking his supporters). He decided it was not worth his time and effort on it and called quits. simples.
How do you equate someone that does not take criticism well = untrustworthy person. I know plenty of people that does not take criticism well and they are just as trustworthy as anyone else. Maybe they are insecure, but that does not affect their artistic ability. Some people have thick skins and keep on producing content regardless of criticism. Other are insecure and if 1 out of a 100 people criticize them, they crumble and want to give up.
That does not have any bearing on their quality of their output. My wife for instance is very insecure. She bakes designer cookies and 99.9% of her customers are praising her work and Ooohing and Aaahhing, but that 0.01% one that criticizes her work makes her want to give up on it. That is just the way some people are built.
The way you talk about the dev and his fans of him games really does not do you any favors. You sound like a schoolyard bully which is ironically the theme of the game. It's always the people that knows absolutely nothing about game development that's the most opinionated and throws around their shitty opinions the easiest.
But as they say: Opinions is like assholes. Everyone has one.
btw. I never said don't have an opinion or do not post your opinion. But It's gets grating after you post your same negative (or positive) opinion for the 100th time. (Not saying you did, but there were plenty posters that did back in the day). Then to have the audacity to think that your holy opinion is the only one that counts, and the dev needs to change his "shitty" story to your opinion is beyond arrogant.
TLDR; The dev probably gave up due the game not being financially successful, but IMO (Like everyone else's asshole) the constant negative comments really did not help.

P.S. Couldn't be more proud of this community when it comes to this game. You guys are the real mvp.
I'm still not convinced this is what happened.
Unless it actually costs money to have the game on itch, there would be no reason to delete it even if he gave up, there is always the chance someone would donate a bit as thanks even for an unfinished game.
And if he was ashamed of his failure and the game, it makes no sense to only delete the things tied to money, website/itch/patreon, while keeping stuff like the youtube and twitter account.
And he can't have forgotten about those two, since youtube was the last ting he posted something on.
A post that was about the A.I. project he was working on and should have been done around the time he disappeared, and if that was the failure that made him leave, that youtube video would have been the first to go.
He hasn't logged in to his f95 account since 1 month before everything got deleted, so chances that it was hurt feeling from comments is also low
My personal theory is he died, family got a hold of his money accounts a month later and quickly deleted what they had access too, because porn.
