That said: I think the game do plenty of things right, but also has a lot of room for tweaks and adjustment. It's full of neat ideas that are dragged down by some weird restriction or design choices.

  • I like the persuasion system, the groundworks is solid. It's simple yet efficient. The different token have clear, distinct effect, you have to check regularly what tokens are left, try you luck or stop and take your gain, etc. I enjoy it, I just don't think it's balanced very well in term of reward and how powerful token are depending on the stage of the game you're in (early/late game).
  • The energy system feels too restrictive to me. Unless I missed something, you only recover 1 energy each week, and this seems asinine. At first it may sounds fair enough, but as soon as you recruit other girls, it turns bonkers because everything take so much time to do. It becomes really grindy. This could be mitigated however by a more forgiving Mental Health management. Why not allow for mental health to replenish when a girl isn't working? As far as know, if you do not assign a girl to a room, she still doesn't enjoy this day off to replinish Mental health? Why not? It seems like a good trade-off, and a way to manage the mental health slightly more easily without having to spend your unique energy point at the end of the week.
  • I like the animations, including the "mundane" one, such as the customer chatting a bit with the barmaid and so on. Great job on that, it makes the game way more lively :D
  • I would enjoy a better shop UI. So far, you can't even see the price of the stuff you're buying unless it's too late and you've bitten the bullet already (and the price are quite steep, so it hurts, haha)

Overall, I enjoyed it, it just feel slightly too grindy and tedious at the moment. Also, I would love seeing more variety in the room animations, but heh, it's not a release version.

Sex scenes are animated? Or pictured?
A mix of the two depending on the scenes. The sex scenes where the girls are working in the club are all animated. The sex scene linked to the story are either animated or pictured (for instance, for one of the girl, Emily, the BJ scene is a slide-show, while the sex scene is quite heavily animated)

Hi. They are for me, although the 0.05_1 was the first and only version I downloaded so if this is a bug due to an upgrade I wouldn't be able to see it. No idea where it could come from. The dev will likely have more clues than me, tho, so hopefully he'll be able to help.

Some people use another term to describe grind, just let me check my notebook. Ah, a "game".

Sorry, but if this is too grindy for you you may just want to avoid anything with "management" as a tag. Or "sandbox".

I pity anyone who think heavy grind and farm are unavoidable, because that would indicate they missed out tons of great management games out there, from Theme Hospital to Parkitect, from Dungeon Keeper to Factorio, from Sim City to Tropico. None of these feel grindy, because grind is not a prerequisite for a management or a sandbox game. Or at least it can be covered, which is the whole point: Grind is okay if it doesn't feel as grind.

Repetitive tasks are not bad per se. Nor they would automatically qualify as grind. There's multiple ways to avoid the "grindy feeling". It can be as simple as a good progression curve (seeing your effort being rewarded) or just keeping the player distracted. If you keep the player busy (would it be through sheer challenge, new events, or active gameplay) you can make him/her repeat the same loop over and over again, and it won't seems grindy in the slightest.

While I did enjoy Club 53, I don't think it strikes a good balance yet on that regard. The management part is still pretty "light" in term of features and does not offer enough challenge to keep the players on their toes. The management decision you take don't have all that much influence on your results. In-between the management parts, you have the "see how the week goes" parts, which mostly just require to click the "next day" button, and take decisions on the occasional randomized events. While all of this is fine and works reasonably well, it's not varied enough to keep the players busy either.

And I don't want to sound like I'm rambling and ranting about the game, here. I think this Club 53 is on good tracks. It's full of nice ideas, quality animations, and it has surprisingly "functional" gameplay for a Ren'Py game, which often tend to be more graphical novel than games (which is not a criticism either, a good VN can be perfectly fine). Also the girls of Club 53 are hot, which is, you know, pretty important for a game around here. So really, I think this games has all the cards in hand to become something really enjoyable, but doesn't strike the sweet spot yet. Either there's too few features for that amount of grind. Or too much grind for that amount of feature, hehe.

TL;DR: "Grind" and "game" are not synonymous. Grind doesn't feel awful if there's enough depth and/or features that bring flavors to the repetitive loop. Club 53 is good on many aspect but currently possess too few features to make that amount of grind fully enjoyable.

I will agree with a lot of what you wrote. Of course "grind" exists in unnecessary form. So my comment earlier to which you may be referring was overly concise. But it was adapted to what happens on these forums. Any game with any "management" element (in the broadest term) will inevitably be described as "too grindy", no matter how many people may disagree. Even more so - again in my experience - if said game includes actual decisions, no matter how trivial. Games which would need you to go to the gym 100 times are happily CTRL skipped (if Ren'Py) with less complaints than games where you need to place girls into workplaces like here.

But many people here don't want real decisions - which is perfectly fine, to each their own. But then you just should know which games to go for. Kinetic novels. VNs with a walkthrough - preferrably included directly.

Also you will have people who do not enjoy the "progress" you mentioned, which for me is the driving force behind any game and story, but want to jump in at the end and have it at once (cf the amount of requests for "full saves" on almost any game). Of course what feels like adequately progressing is pretty subjective.

And my assessment towards the original poster lies a lot on the fact that in this aspect Club 53 is quite a way removed from the most "grindy" games you will find on here. So if this is a "Jesus Christ" level grind, you probably just will not enjoy most of them and to avoid disappointment it may be best to steer clear of them. Which again is nothing I say to annoy those people but just the way it is in my opinion. If you do not enjoy doing stuff at the level you have to do here (and the post was just about the game being too grindy, not about the rewards being inadequate), you will probably not enjoy many of the others.

Many people also seem to prefer the VN style and are stumped when they encounter something different like a game, so they might want to know the warning signs.

Ho then, I agree with you. Your observation are also pretty on point. It's true that even when the grind is not really THAT daunting, a fair share of people who are here mostly for the lewd reward and would rather have cheat and/or fuill save from the get go than experience the game. And to be fair, that's a perfectly valid opinion too. I don't share it, because I, for one, like the "game" part, but I can completely understand that some people want to play a smut game just to quickly get to the smut part.

In this case, I think one of the driving force is/could be/will be the individual story with the girls. So far, there's a real incentive to persuade two of the 4 girls because you know you will progress their story after each level. For the other two, there's nothing at the moment (it's a in dev game, obviously, I don't except complete content) so leveling them doesn't feel rewarding at all. It just takes a lot of time for nothing, because the advantage of doing so are marginal. At best, you'll gain slightly more money each week but that's about it. There's no story nor new animation.

If it has an impact on the management part (e.g. each girl having their clear preference and bonus to certain room) and if they were to offer different animations for a same room, it would give player more incentive. But I'm just rambling here, it's obviously up to the dev do decide what he want to do with his own game. All in all I agree with you and wish the best to the author of this game, I'll sure play any further release of it.
