There is absolutely nothing in Patreon'sYou must be registered to see the linksforcing a creator to provide content on a timely basis. Creators can update on a regular basis to attract more pledges if they want, but by no means are they required to deliver on their promises. That's why it's a donation system.
Anyone pledging money on Patreon should be aware of this.

And that's why I agree with your comment about the arguments that crop up
To illustrate: I'm a patron of a dev that hasn't released an update in several months, but he updates his progress every couple of weeks. He doesn't have many patrons yet, but I like what he has planned and so I pledge a donation to encourage him to continue. I'm not buying anything, and who knows, maybe the end result will be disappointing. But he is open to suggestions while remaining true to his vision, and we exchange emails and he appreciates my input while I appreciate his skill. To me, that's what being a patron is all about.
