To riff on your point, he goes beyond politeness and is purposefully patient and considerate of others, not just his daughter. But, like anyone who is pushed unfairly, he'll defend himself and those he can help with appropriate assertiveness. Witness his decisive fights with Lucas, including his knocking the jerk silly as both defense for D in their apartment and as payback for the prior, cheap shot that gave him a concussion. Further, he consciously overcame his much-discussed deference to the A+ personality of Rachel from when D was younger and orchestrated a successful play to win her freedom AND legally smack Rachel in the ass in one massive effort on a wing and a prayer.
Being considerate towards others and caring about their feelings doesn't mean you're necessarily perfect (e.g., he has the ability to cheat on D in this game, even though he shows signs of increasing regret+guilt after doing so; plus let's recognize that he has been going after his adult daughter since early in the game, when she was far more naive) or that you're a some kind of lame "beta" male stereotype: you're just another person and happen to think of more perspectives, plus tend to be less of a dick towards others (though again, not guaranteed).
In this game we can see the MC tries to think of others but also wrestles with his own feelings and desires constantly, even though he often gives in to them and still tries to not hurt others in the process. It makes him more complex than a mostly testosterone-driven Cro-Magnon and that's why things such as a sharing path are possible: he can see more perspectives and rationalize some of the ones where hopefully more people get what they want ... as can we, the players.

If you remember in Chapter 2 D was impressed the MC didn't punch out the random drunken douchebag in the restaurant, more than she would have been had he done so.
So the MC's politeness is being more adult than a low-self-esteem person.
