I don't really know what MrDots has earned before Patreon has gone down the drain, but how would it be, if devs are using Crowdfunding sites for each updates?

Just to set a "monthly-fee", something like 8 grands (+/-) a month to keep his team alive and then maybe release each month a update - even if it's just small process.

Only until some better solution has occured, because it's always a lot work, regarding to those monthly crowdfundingcampains and keep updates on time.

What exactly would you call Patreon if not a crowdfunding platform? It is the biggest, most popular and easiest to use platform for exactly what you want out there. And the quasi-monthly update schedule is also fairly typical in this whole genre/business...

And the problem with alternative crowdfunding platforms is that the big ones have fairly similar policies to Patreon and/or are far less suitable to the whole business model. And DmD especially skirts a lot of things that almost all major corps don't exactly wish to have on their sites.

Dont know why people are writing shit.mr dots said he is continuing this and it is his MAIN project.
Because an already "slow" progress rate coupled with most significantly likely less monetization potential, the seeming wish of Mr.Dots to do most of the work himself and the needs for a completely new project (that in turn will have access to the far bigger userbase of Patreon) doesn't exactly point towards the brightest future for DmD. Sure maybe it will beat the odds and continue apiece but I personally wouldn't get my hopes up.

I don't fully disagree with anything you're saying, and I hope I'm not coming off brash. I mean everything I say in the spirit of good conversation and debate.
DMD is my first VN.
Same here. Until Mr. Dots, I didn't even know what Patreon was. He's the reason I signed up to begin with.

setting/keeping a deadline day is paramount.
Absolutely! This is just good business. And if you're going to miss deadlines, you need to communicate fully, clearly and above all accurately with your customers. They will be much more forgiving of a truth up front than an excuse after the fact.

For the game itself, the most important element is coding (various types). Then comes rendering since that's the main "drawing card" of VNs after all.
As a dev I don't think I could put these in any kind of hierarchical order because they are all equally important. I could have the best story in the world with gorgeous renders, and if my code breaks down constantly, I fail. On the same token, I could have the cleanest, most efficient and reliable code possible, but if my story is weak and my renders garbage, I fail. To me all three, code, renders and story must be given equal priority for ongoing success.

Even if a dev can write a novel or short-story (if he would be so inclined), there are only so many hours in a day.
I've written short stories before and gone through about 75% of Nanowrimo two years in a row, and I have to say, writing a VN is WAY faster and easier. This is because I can focus purely on dialogue. I don't have to spend precious word count describing scenes, mood, setting, etc. All of that is taken care of by the renders. I just have to worry about what my characters are saying and the rest is dealt with visually. This makes writing a VN story for me personally, much faster. I can lay down several scenes of dialogue in a matter of hours.

My main questions are : is it feasible? ; is it sustainable?
I'll have to let you know when our first story is done, because I'm still answering these questions for myself.

well actually I wonder how he plans to do this, since Patreon already told him that he can't collect money to fuel DmD even if it's off of their platform. Also he said that half of his Patreons use paypal and that in his country Stripe doesn't work.

@RomanHume: I didn't have the chance to follow this thread in the last few days, are there any news I should know about? I mean, I know about the whole issue, but has there been any developement?

If you're caught up on the whole "Patreon shut him off and he has a new project that he hasn't revealed any details about" then you are still pretty caught up. There is a lot of speculation about his new avatar and someone is saying her name is Melody and that she is a young pop star and you play her agent. But I haven't seen anything to substantiate that rumor, so I'm not sure where it started or if it's true.

Other than that, you haven't missed much.

Oh, and then about every tenth post is someone once again introducing the idea of:
a. Hatreon
b. Paypal
c. Devs starting their own Patreon
d. continuing the game on Patreon and trying to hide it.

Even though all of these subjects have been thoroughly talked out...they are still being brought up like they're "new ideas".

It's hard to tell the age without seeing the rest of her. At a glance, I would say 17/18, but depending on how the rest of her is developed...she might look older.

As for Dark Silver, that's incredibly ambitious. We started our game with an target of 13 love interests and quickly found this unmanageable. It was going to take too long to develop the stories and the releases were going to be atrocious. Our goal is to have most of our game wrapped up by year end so we can move on the next one. So made the hard cut to 7.

I can't imagine juggling 30 characters.
some devs fall on that trap, they got interesting concepts but sometimes they get too ambitious and get swamped in their own ambition

I think a dev with a dedicated team could pull something like this off, DS was one of the few I think could do something like this, but there is no way to know how hard the patrons will leave their pledges now

and also, 30 characters with Female Protagonist, half of them probably male, so exciting! (not)

You don´t need a mac version, just download Ren´py and play. It works all Ren´py games, it´s free and really easy to use.

1) Download win-based RenPy game.
2) Then download the SDK: (macOS Ren'Py SDK).
3) Run Ren'Py DMG, extract the files.
4) Unzip your game and then put it in Ren'Py folder.
5) Run Renpy.app, refresh your projects list, choose "GAME NAME" and then press "Launch Project".

HI could anyone help me with this, I have tried it but it does not seem to work for me

I agree with everything except the importance you assign to the "story".
My reason for stressing story is strictly personal. I just want a good story to go along with my porn. Some dialogue that isn't contrived and unbelievable. That was reason one we wanted to do our own project, to see if we could improve upon that.

What you describe is harmonious development and is a great achievement.
But imagine when something goes wrong. Then being "on the clock" with a monthly update can lead to a lot more drinking and a lot less sleeping.
I'm a professional programmer that writes software and analytics packages in Java, R, Python, C++ and VB. Driving through the night to hit deadlines is nothing new. And if I had 2,000 followers on Patreon and was banking $10k a month writing fiction porn, I would gladly work a couple of 60 hour weeks to hit the deadline no problem!

Renders seem to be the "easiest" to replicate ((I'm sure getting it right the first time is no picnic) once there is enough time.
This is where we encounter a lot of our drag. We decided if we were going to do this we were going to use Iray's photoreal engine, which we do. But on our current hardware setup, the renders take a long time to accomplish. IF we could speed that up, we'd be cranking out chapters left and right.

Coding is the most difficult : Ren'py is chosen over Unity to somewhat simplify the process (it is my understanding that this is the main trouble-spot for VNs when branching proliferates).
I think it's only a trouble spot if you're new to programming. Since Ren'py is all python based, anything you can do in Python you can do in Ren'py. This opens up the whole world of object oriented programming. So managing story paths doesn't have to be a challenge if you know how to keep your scripts organized.

In most VNs there are typos galore. Where is the proofreading?
I've written a lot of this off to bad translations, but that may just be ignorant on my part. But it is my hope that anyone playing our game who notices any typos points that shit out to us so we can fix it.
The one ingredient they virtually all lack : cohesive, plausible plots. Many individual characters are vivid enough that the renders (and a player's imagination) can atone for literary shortcomings. The best example of this is the adorable D of DMD.
I agree with this 200%!

Gotta say, I can appreciate how much time and thought you've given this. You've clearly done your homework. Either that or you're just very intuitive.

A valid point. I just worry about how slow the development of a story that size will be. Knowing nothing about DS's setup, team or capabilities. I mean, I liked the structure of BB, the renders were great, the story was absurd, but it was fun all the same.

And there is the possibility that through working on BB they've developed a very solid work flow to make such a task manageable. Time will tell.

Welcome to the good ol' U.S. of A. Where it's perfectly acceptable to sacrifice 2,800 soldiers in a 17 year old war that we can't win, but a digital dick slipping into a digital snizz is criminal!

To be fair. I love my country, but hate some of its people.

Wait, haven't been following since they were taken off Patreon. So DmD is in limbo for the forseeable future too?
