Hey guys,
I'm new to this site, and to adult games in general. With COVID-19 i got way too much time on my hands, and discovered this type of games, and really liked them.
But i do have a question tho. I skimmed through your forum, and as i understand, there was a change in policy from patreon a while back, so that any game with incest in it had to be rewritten with something more "socially acceptable". It leads to some silly conversations in game, and this game is no exception (my "childhood friend" ? really ?)
I personally don't really care for incest, it's mostly a turn off for me, tho some of the games i tried managed to make it kind of hot.
My question is : how comes incest is present in pretty much every adult game i played ? Is that such a popular fetish or something ?
I'm not judging, but i'm a bit curious about it.
Anyway, glad i found your site, i love it and it does make this rather awkward period of time fly by much faster for me.
The history of it is kind of interesting... Now, I'm only going to tell things from my perspective as someone who's been into porn for way too long for their own good =P. So back in the day, mainstream American pornographic material focused on certain situational fetishes, that were profession-based, power-based, cheating, next-door neighbor, etc, and then a bit of gonzo. The only American site that focused on relationship porn was Naughty America, and even then, it was like my sister's best friend, my aunt, etc.
Mainstream porn was pretty focused genre-wise by country/region, up until around 2010 I'd guess. Germany produced a lot of prop-fetish porn (BDSM/latex, wet and messy, etc.), Britain produced a lot of solo/pinup/glamour content (and still does for the most part), broader Europe and Brazil produced mostly gonzo. Japan was (and still is) famous for producing taboo porn, based mostly on illegal and antisocial behavior like public molestation, blackmail, rape, and of course, incest.
The porn industry is clearly driven by metrics and has been consolidated in the west by large number crunching corporations over the years that have bought out most large independent studios. These large corporations noticed that there is a very large contingent of porn consumers who are fanatical about taboo categories, mainly blackmail(coercion) and incest, and that indifferent consumers would still consume this content if it was good. So they started to shift towards blackmail and step-cest porn and away from the situational genres that had dominated American porn. However they avoid the harder versions of these genres, I am not sure if it's because they don't think the broader western market wants this content or if it's because some western and middle eastern payment processors won't allow this kind of content.
Obviously, the trends that affect larger porn markets also affect independent ones. Even more so for the surge of western VNs which have risen with the advent of cheap payment processing and easily purchasable and poseable 3D assets. The creators and consumers of these western VNs are mostly influenced by the large market of Japanese 2D eroge that preceeded them, so they gravitated to the hard taboo themes that have dominated these games for decades.
But western and middle eastern payment processors tend to not allow real pornography featuring these themes to avoid legal issues in some of the countries in which they operate and because they have independently assessed them as vehicles for fraud. So as Patreon grew larger and more public, it became more intertwined with larger processors and came under stricter scrutiny for its content. So it banned fictional material featuring the hard taboos that Japanese porn had pioneered for decades and that had metastasized in a milder form into larger mainstream porn in the west, along with any hard pornographic content featuring real performers regardless of content.
So game creators had to adjust their material to avoid mass bans, and became reliant on sites like F95zone that they had varying relationships with (some love the platforms for giving their games broader recognition, some hate them for providing their paid content for free) to distribute incest/taboo patches to play their games in the way they were intended while being publicly dissociated with the hard taboo material. Others take a risk and just hide they taboo content in the game's code, which most experienced players can figure out how to unlock or know a source in which to find out how to unlock the content. So if you aren't really aware of the workings of the independent VN scene of recent years, a lot of the stilted disjointed dialogue in unpatched games would obviously seem strange to you, because it's not being consumed in its intended form.
So in conclusion, yes, incest, among other hard taboos, is a popular genre, but it has been driven underground in the independent game/VN scene due to the largest platform that enables independent developers having to adhere to mainstream business practice as it grew into a more public entity. Unfortunately I cannot source any of this as it's purely based on my observations, speculations, and individual discussions over 18 years of porn consumption.
