I just wanted to say, as an aspiring writer, I really appreciate hearing about your process. It is both educational, when you bring up some aspect of writing I hadn't considered, and comforting, when I've wondered if I was the only one having x problem. Anyway, you know it's true, no other dev has been as approachable in these forums as you have, so thank you!
Our pleasure. And of course you know if you ever have any questions, we're happy to answer them. Whether it's about the game, our process or anything beyond. Again, we were players before we were developers. We always had more appreciation for the developers who were giving lots of updates and keeping patrons informed than the ones we'd contribute to, and then hear nothing until it was time for an update. You never knew if the game was moving forward, had it stalled, just silence.

We also like to take criticism head on. Not because we're confrontational, but because much of the time people's complaints are born of either misunderstanding or misinformation. If we can get out front and offer all the relevant info straight from the dev's mouth, that leaves little room for speculation. Cheers!

Have the same issue too, the more people show interest in what I am working on, and the more the talk to me about it, the more inspired I am to work on it, and make it better.
Sumodeine, of My sister My Roommate is also quite nice to chat with, as well as some of the guys on the Amity Park project, like Moira.
Have you published or made public any of your work? I'd love to check it out.

Haven't heard of the other two projects tough. Based on our what you know of our preferences, do you recommend we check them out?

There, fixed that for ya.
I told you have a problem with typos. Thanks for the correction.(y)

The only time that makes sense is if you have a religious girl, who thinks that , or something like that.
I don't care how many times I've seen this video, it never gets old.

It’s date night, and Monica has to figure out what she’s going to wear. She only recently met Roger, and she’s still unsure of where his particular tastes lie. Fortunately, she knows her own strengths and when all else fails she knows she can rely on them. That said, she’s narrowed down her choice of wardrobe to three dresses. Which one she settles on is completely up to you.
The choices are as follows:
A. Slinky: Every woman has buried some where in her closet, some thing slinky, simple and black. Monica is no exception. There’s nothing fancy about it, but with her body there doesn’t need to be. It perfectly shows off all of her ample curves and clings tightly to every inch of her body. If this doesn’t turn Roger on, nothing will.
B. Stylish: This blue masterpiece has been stashed in her closet for a while. She doesn’t get to take it out often. But when she does, she’s going some place classy and is looking to turn heads. And turn them she does. The sleek cut and window to heart has made even the most chaste men look twice. Surely Roger would be no exception.
C. Sexy: But if there is one thing she loves, it’s a good party. And when spending a night out on the town or going to the club, this cut of purple perfection gets it done. Depending on her mood, this number can tease, turn on and turn it up. She’s never had a problem keeping a man’s attention in this dress. If she wore this, she’d have Roger’s attention all night.

I think Monica looks good in anything.

A. This is a classic dress in most media. For something so simple it seems to show a lot. When this baby pops up you know tongues are going to pop out of people's mouths. My choice.

B. I think I've seen the gist of the outfit in a few video games. As well as some french fashion models (Hey don't judge me). It has the ability to peek out the girls while hiding the real surprise underneath.

C. Can't go wrong with showing more skin. Definitely a dress for the more confident ladies and ones that are on the prowl for a mate. This dress also looks like it shows her full back (Again no judging). A good pick.

Side note. To bad there isn't a dress that shows off her abs (Seriously stop judging me). Perhaps a future date with the MC or something for the bedroom (A man can dream anyway).

Nice job. Keep up the awesome.

So far, all I have published is 1.3 Ranma Fanfics. The first one got interrupted by my partner and editor taking an extended leave, the other took me about 3-3.5 years to write ...my "short story" idea (600k+ words), but it is now complete. The first one was literally the first time I ever tried to write anything in a story format, so it took me a while to figure out what I was doing, the first few chapters are white literally terrible. I leave them to mark my own improvement. Plan to go back to the first one, I have about 25 more chapters planned for it, but I feel weird working on it without my partner and co-creator, so I started designing a few of these game ideas, though they are a long ways form being publishable.

My Sister My Roommate, the art is not as good as yours, and his story is not one in which you can choose all, but the writing is excellent, and the story is fun. I do recommend it. He deserves more attention, but his art, and the posted screen shots are not really good. Molly is adorable! ;p
Amity Park is an open world style adventure, based on Danny Phantom. It's 2D, so if you are not into that, then you might not care for it, but it also went through a major rewrite a while back, and it starting to really come together.

Question to the community: What is your opinion on music in adult virtual novels? What about voice acting? Is there a demand for either? Just curious.

Probably gonna run a poll at a later date and get some feedback from the patrons as well. Just wondering what the community at large thinks.

This game still exists? I think I started playing in its early days like half a year ago, and then never saw it in the update feeds here since. I remember checking their website too, but it didn't give much information at the time, or I missed something.

Anyway, judging by the v1.0.4, the "first chapter" is finally done?

I assume I am in the minority, but I generally turn the music down, if not off first thing in every game of every type. It's not so much that I mind it, but usually it's set WAY too loud for my system, and blows me out before I even get a chance to go into the options (Also, I have tinnitus, and have to have music playing all the time to drowned out the ringing in my ears, so I need it to stay uninterrupted :p).

I generally also am not a huge fan of voice acting, depending on how limited it is, or how good it is. It's jut one more thing that might annoy my neighbors. I don't like putting on headphones.

I quite like a little music but I always turn it really low because it can distract me while I'm reading the text, I'm very easily distracted. If there's music I generally expect some subtle sound effects when it makes sense, hearing a door when the MC is being stealthy and it not being a problem within the narrative annoys me for example.

I don't generally like voice acting. It can be great, but if you ever stumble upon a picture or video of an actress from erotic games or animation and she's not attractive to you it can ruin her character's appeal. I know it's perfectly possible for a voice actress to be super hot, but everyone has different tastes and unless she looks exactly like the character it can be a bit of a gamble.
There's also the fact that amateur voice acting can be awful, and if you go with professionals or career voice over artists then you generally get what you pay for and it can be expensive to get quality. Not to mention the fact that professionals might often inflate prices for erotic content.

So if I were in a situation where I had a budget for sound then I'd spend most of it on subtle background music, maybe something catchy for the title screen or credits if you implement them. I really liked that Doki Doki had lyrics with its end credits music, it was a really nice surprise, but it was also meant to be one of the characters singing so I have the same concerns as I mentioned for voice acting in this area as well. The rest of the budget I'd put on some ambient sounds and sound effects.

It is all down to preferences though. Ultimately, unless you're confident you're going to be making enough money to spend on it or unless you're confident you have the time and skills to do it all yourself I wouldn't bother much. Many people playing these kinds of games are generally in it for the visuals and the story.

As with the previous replies, I almost always turn the sound off. As was mentioned, the voice acting has to be perfect or else it's pretty awful. When it comes to music, I've really enjoyed the soft pieces that accompany most VNs, but only the soft ones. In the rare VN that I've read where they try to throw in action music for scenes with action, it's again cringeworthy. But a soft piano solo piece can really make a romantic scene. Having said that, it's kind of a trope now, which is off-putting for some. It also requires a fair amount of variety, else it becomes distractingly repetitive.
For two examples of VNs with sound done right, I recommend these:

In all cases, as was mentioned above, make sure the volume on ANY sound is set very low by default. Also wouldn't hurt if any music fades in instead of starting at volume suddently. Scares the wits out of me when sound starts up when I'm not expecting it.
For RomanHume's benefit, do any of you here have an opinion on Daughter for Dessert's voice acting? They started doing that about the time I stopped following it, so I can't say how successful it's been.

I usually turn down music. If you're gonna add music it has to put you in the mood.
In the case of voice acting as much I love it if it is bad it will break the game. With VA you either do it right or not do it at all.

I like both. When it's good\suitable of course. If i could choose one, i'd prefer some good bgm\sound effects though. Love it when it suits the scene. And contrary to the previous commenters, i pretty much never turn sound down\off in the games if it's not too loud. It even adds to my relaxation or immersion more, not distracts. Less sure about voice acting since sometimes it can pretty bad in the games of this kind. But when it's quality and sensual, then of course by all means. Overall, for me these both are always important parts of what can make the quality game even better. As for the demand, i'd say there are, but probably would be in big favor of just wanting music since many are just as unsure about voice actresses.

@RomanHume @Ti'elby Mercedes

Sounds/music is fine as long as you set it up to where you can turn them down.

Voices are fine as long as you can turn them off or on as well and don't do like daughter for dessert and use it as a cash grab. They have it to where somewhere in each game the people talking have voices but after a bit it gets removed with the if you want them to continue to have voices become a member. I would prefer that daughter for dessert didn't play the voices unless you select it. If it's not in the whole game then I don't want to hear it.

The DFD voice acting seems to be pretty high quality, I think I remember Kat's voice really went well with the character's appearance. I agree with @myuhinny in that it was annoying the way they implemented voiced sections in the free version to try and get more people over to premium though, it felt like a cheap shot.
I'm pretty sure DFD is also an example of a time where I've found out or known what a voice actress looks like and it's made me find a character somewhat less attractive though. I'm not sure, it's been a while since I touched DFD.

I like the music in context with the game like . In games with standard music I reduce the volume to the minimum.

An an example of very good acting voice you can find in , really improves the game.

Well, they all pretty much use music from the same sources. Royalty free, bensound etc. Not sure what you mean by standard. I agree about DA though. And personally, i also found selection of tracks in for example to be quite nice.

1. Music - I think this can really set a scene whether it be sexual, romantic, or atmosphere. Like some people have said it should start low before it comes in so as not to jar the player. like in movies and tv music can really set the mood and turn an okay scene into a fantastic scene. It's all about context. Renpy already gives an option to turn off music so you won't have to worry about that feature.

2. Sound - As with music this can set scenes or moods if done right. It's not required but it can help some people get immersed into the world. Same thing don't make the sound effect super loud and you should be fine. I'll admit the only sound that matters to me in an adult novel is the moaning of pleasure from the female characters (Though this can be put under the voice section as well).

3. Voice - This can make or break a game experience depending on the voice itself. If the voice is good i'm all for it. If it's bad or cheesy, it depends on what story your telling. Like if your making a bad porn or something like that. I wasn't a fan of the Daughter for Dessert voice acting cause it's only in there for a short time so it is a little jarring to stop hearing it all of a sudden.
As @UncleVT said the voice acting in Sylvia is quite superb whether it be the english or french actress.

I'm all for an immersive experience. So these things being added can only be a bonus. I will still play the game if they are not because of the characters and the setting.

Keep up the good fight.
