Do I want to play a porn game for 60 hours? Probably not.
And I'd rather have devs to finish their projects and try something new, different, maybe better, instead being stuck with one thing for years.
But that's my opinion.
I checked Selebus and if he does 5 hours of content per month for ~5k $, then it's fine, I guess - especially since that's his fulltime job. But he's an exception.

I'm not saying there are no exceptions.

My point is - japanese games get finished and most patreon projects never see the finish line. And you can't just generalize that they are short and there is not a lot of artwork. Just like with everything - there is a lot of shit, but there's also a lot of good stuff.
But this is completely different discussion, and tbh, a matter of personal preference.
The thing is, our generosity is creating a generation of lazy devs who waste their talents and potential because they can get easy money with little effort.
I'm not saying patreon is bad - it's a good concept and a chance for many devs. I'm bashing "patreon mentality" and people who are content with getting very little every month which results in never-ending development. After all, if not our donations and support, those lazy, "useless" devs wouldn't exist. But as long as people are fine throwing money at those projects, the problem will just be getting bigger.

That is true. As I've previously said, one of my favorite games of all time is the Grisaia series made my Japanese devs Frontwing. And yeah, I would say most patreon devs are lazy...so hard to find the good ones.

Might I ask which game made by Japanese devs do you love to play the most? I'm looking for a couple more good games I could dip my toes into... :)

In that sense the Kickstarter mindset was/is better than Patreon. At least they were/are pitching 'full projects' there.
Sure, KS ain't what it used to be back in it's hay day, but still.

All crowdfunding has the risk of non-delivery of what was promised, as history has shown.
But at least with the KS mindset they're working towards a final product (towards a, technically, set deadline).

Though ... many projects are being handled correctly as well. Just look at the hyped BRZRKR comic book project or the eroge projects that Dharker Studios puts on Kickstarter (though they also maintain a Patreon).
The BRZRKR KS is for the whole series to be delivered to your doorstep and ...

Dharker has shown to deliver as well on their KS projects.
Now let's see if they can deliver on Paradise Girls as it's funded to be huge.

As for Patreon ... yeah ... it's a license for perpetual minor updates at best. The problem being ... if you're building a 20 story building and when you get to the 10th floor, you get the idea that you wanted the 5th floor to be built different ... you can't really change it anymore. With a game, you technically can, but then it gets annoying for the player. Either through broken/incompatible saves forcing you to restart the game or otherwise annoying side effects.

If you build a complete product, and release it ... you can rebuild the 5th floor as often as you want, but just unveil the completed building as you envisioned it (even if you changed your mind 20 times).

I then always have to wonder ... will it ever be complete ya know.

Well, both models have up- and downsides. As said, quite a few good devs either started part time without having a plan or are still working part time and for these kickstarter usually isn't really an option at all.

Sure, if you've got the time, a team, real ambitions and maybe even a name, kickstarter is nice, but that's really not how most games here are made and without patreon they'd probably never happen at all. In that sense both platforms cater to a very different audience. Kickstarter essentially gives certain guarantees to both sides (dev have the money and users have a claim to a product) while patreon is the opposite. Devs may not get the money they need or want for their game while users may not get the product.

@easy85:
Are you actually so sure about the japanese market? Or isn't it more the case that all this stuff that doesn't get done will never even leave Japan? I mean, who'd bother translating unfinished games when there are so many finished ones that don't even get a translation? That's actually a genuine question, since I don't speak japanese and have no idea what's going on in that market.

Oh, and I certainly didn't want to generalize. I just said that many of the games that get translations are quite simple and it probably won't take much more than a few weeks to draw the art for a complete shortish standard VN or so. And even that still doesn't mean that these games are bad, in fact quite a few of them are actually really, really nicley written and done.

I mean, you can go to Ci-en and check it yourselft. Just browse top 30 devs and see if they are doing "endless updates" or if they actually released multiple games (they ususally have links to their works on dlsite).
It's completely different mentality. Even if they are taking donations, their goal is to finish a game, sell it and move on to the next project. Even "a bad apple" like Umai Neko (you'll see him somewhere in top 20 R18 section - mostly monthly updates with barely any new content) eventually managed to finish his game and moved on to the next project.

But it's also a different and bigger market. Finishing games and selling them will always be their main source of income and donations are just supporting them (like they supposed to do). On our side, it's the other way around because customer base is smaller and we don't have a big, popular platform/store like dlsite.

Well ... as long as they're made in Japan ... chances of that are slim to none.
Only if they can 'work via' a 3rd party that isn't based out of Japan (like Kagura or MangaGamer or something) can they actually get that done.

At the other end of the spectrum, 'Western developed' games are unc by default, even if they use Japanese style artwork. But they don't have Japanese law to deal with either.
The Japanese 'art style' ain't limited or copyrighted by Japanese law after all. :p

Though clearly, it doesn't seem like it's Japan only. After all, from what I've seen ... ero webtoons (Korea) are censored as well.
Consistently using the whole light sabers & white holes BS even, so the worst kind.

I like the art, it really suits my taste. and hopefully the game contains all my fetishes, When it's complete, I wouldn't mind buying it to support the creator :).
