So I edited the NPC mappings in the game to reflect relationships such as mom, bro, sis etc, but i see nothing in the actual dialog in the game that shows that, it still says the character names. What am I missing?

Same deal here. The game appears in the process log as active, but doesn't launch.
Are you guys using the package that includes all the images? Because if not, the game download the images first off a possibly slow server.

I honestly couldn't tell you :O I downloaded the updated version from MEGA, and have no clue whether or not that includes all the images or not, and there are no other versions of the game in the op. What I can tell you though, is that being connected to the internet or blocking the game via my firewall makes no difference, just appears in processes but doesn't launch.

Tags list both male and female protag. Dev notes say female. Can someone give me the real info on this? Is it optional? Switches between the two? Is one of the tag wrong? I'm not going to "just try it" and waste bandwith if I have to play as female for all or most of the game.

You choose at the start which of 2 completely different an unrelated characters you will control. One is male (Max from BB) and one is female (Kate). They both live in the same world, but really the two story lines, where you live, what you do during the day, etc, have nothing in common.
Basically the two choices to start mean they are two completely different games. The male game has close to zero content.

Case in point: Kate's body model is very different to everyone else's.
Helen's body model is clearly different to Alice's. Jane seems to be taller than everyone else for some reason.
The one character that might be mistaken for a head swap job would be Angela.
Lisa, Kira and Ann all have their own models. Ann and Lisa look a little like Alice because they're family. Kira's the black sheep, so to speak.
Kira is close to looking like someone swapped out Julia's head but she's a much bigger girl. Also, Julia's not that tall.
The one that seems to share a lot of traits with the others would be Sophie. Vicky's differences are very minor, but that's okay. There's no content for her yet.
The teachers may look like each other but they're just different enough to count. Especially Nicky. Love her content so far.
I guess Adam kind of looks like Nicolas, but Max surely doesn't.
