Personally, I think any dev adding any sort of "online requirement" for any part of their game is shooting themself in the foot. I admit that I do give Steam a pass on their "phone home occasionally" requirement built into their DRM but unlike most dev websites I feel much more confident that Valve won't decide to just pull the plug on a multibillion dollar revenue stream for no reason.
I can play my Steam games for days or weeks at a time without an internet connection. When my ISP does maintenance at some random time and drops my connection for several hours at a time, I can still play all of my games. As long as I don't leave my internet connection permanently disconnected I'm fine. For games with an online requirement that can't check off every one of those boxes there is no way I'm paying for it. I may pirate it long enough to mess around with it but I would never pay for it.
