That would depend on what is doesn't it? And on that scale, people are wired different in how far they want to go to achieve what they want/need.There is a spectrum though. How far are you willing to go to get what you want? If you know how to make someone do something do something they don't want to do, would you?
As for Haley (and mc). They know its wrong to hide their relationship from Sandra, they know it's immoral. They are trying to trick Sandra into accepting something, that, if it were presented to her head on, she more than likely would not accept, and this is much more Haley's action than MC's action.
So imo Haley is a lot more manipulative than your average person.
As for trying to nudge someone into accept a relationship, that happens all over the world today as well. People of a different sexual orientation, or involved in relationships that not seen as the norm. Might find themselves in not quite the same, but similar situation, where they have to get people (more often, family), to accept their relationship and situation.
