I can't honestly believe this talk is still going on about Chapter 8. There was nothing wrong with it at all. Yes the grandfather's "power projection" thing is present, but show me a rich person like him that doesn't do the same thing? Obviously Miss Maid is used to it, but that still doesn't make it right. If he sincerely wants Ash back to work with Lynn, then I think it's a good thing, no matter what Lynn says or not. Maybe it would bring her back to what she used to be as Ash said in the limo on the way back.
As for the MC being who he is, it was said that it was written that way for a purpose. But no, he's not a leader, he's like what you said, an influencer, like the scenario of an angel sitting on one shoulder, and a demon on the other. He's trying to influence Em with her emotional/outburst issues and you can see, at the end, on the limo ride back, I think, that Ash is finally seeing him as trustworthy and dependable, even after all the crap she gave him. The MC going with Ash on the ride was a big turning point in her character I believe.
So he's not the brightest light bulb in the pack. But yes, he did show A LOT of maturity in Chapter 8 back and forth in the limo and at the mansion, talking to Madeleine then the grandfather. Hopefully we'll see him grow up a bit more. Because if the relationship with Em and the MC grow, he's going to have to evolve on some level, become more responsible, more dependable, trustworthy, and just overall, really start being a man.
Forget the alpha, beta, gamma crap. This game is different from most VNs and to me, it's pretty much written the way life is. Not much is sugar-coated here and that's the way other VNs need to be. It takes a troublemaker kid and hopefully, with help, starts to mold him into a productive member of society with a job, responsibilities, and in this case, and most likely, a girlfriend in Emily, who's the kind of girl that would care for and help him through things. His "inner dialogue" might not want to get too sappy yes, but I think deep down, he's looking for a connection with someone that's like him, and he found that in Emily.
With all that said, I'm very much looking forward to the post-Mansion game. I think a lot of things are going to change now. You had 8 episodes to build relationships with the people in the game including Luis and Monroe. Now, the real fun is going to start and hopefully end well for everyone involved.
