I would say the Fan version...the official one sounds like the Fakku version don't download that one if thats the case ....... also you made want to look up 4k skins/HSSS/LRE mods and on the fan discord for the visuals.
As an info for some members asking about the fate of HS1 and what you can do with it now, "Pale Carnations", one of the best games on site, is made with a heavily modded HS1! This pic is from the game:

Ok, I'm sure, I now have the best possible folder of HS1, my cards and instalation is so good part of me kinda wants to post screenshots, maybe give em a picture, and release a patreon, but I'm not fully clear on the copyright deal. Tho I think someone already does that, and they're shitty.

I downloaded some mods (mainly characters and clothes, or so I thought) and a lot of characters ended up having a super glowing skin. I tried to fix that by downloading and reinstalling 4k Skin Diffuse pack, and then LRE. I wish I had just decided to live with the glowing skin (that can be changed on each character individually), because now the game looks like this and I can't figure out how to fix this. So, while I'm trying to locate where my HS backup is, any ideas how to fix this?

I'm gonna be straight with you, I personally got a sht ton of problems like you, it was not until I downloaded a fully modded 50gb Honey select that I started to get going. But, if you wanna try and fix it with the almost certainty of breaking your game further, get HSResolveMoreslotID, there's like a tab that shows you your main mods (LRE, etc) and buttons to enable/disable them.
Not related to my "solution", just curio, is that the og newer 4Kskin? I don't even remember which card I had needed like the newer paid 4k skin to work and not the shared one, that's why I'm asking.

I think I may have fucked up installing the latest LRE when trying to fix the initial glowy skins. Kind of the classic thing: making it worse by trying to fix something that was easily manageable. From what you say, I think I just need to locate my backup... As you can see from the screenshot, backgrounds have all but disappeared and skin, eyes etc. do not look right.

UPDATE: I managed to google how to bring back the background in character creator. It's an Image Based Lighting (IBL) plugin issue and in case others have the same problem, here's the fix: Go to Userdata\GraphicSetting\, open Config.xml, and change <CharaMakerReform> to 'False'.
Also, instead of pretending to know what I'm doing, I installed Metagraphy's LRE Starting Kit and I've now got a preset I can probably live with.

Ah the 4k is gotten from some guy's patreon or something, I don't know the specifics. But I do know last time I tried there was only paid links. Didn't want to venture since I already had the previous 4k Skin installed somewhere. I do reccomend you get like a full installation link if you can store it (50-100gbs) otherwise, you risk getting to a point like I was where you want a new mod but for some reason it ain't working.
I just want to mention, Unlike most Porn content where you feel shame, wasted of your time. you know a game is good when you finish invigorated from playing it.
I am so glad I deleted my HS2, so I could backup my HS1 folder in 4 different locations.

Does anyone know where I can get the base HS2 game with just the studio mode, english translation and uncensored patch but nothing else in the way of mods and what not?
I have a very old computer and not a lot in the way of HDD space and memory so I hope to get the base game with just the studio mode, english translation and uncensored patch so I can buld up the game to my specs without a lot of stuff that I don't need or will use.
