Or maybe he was just an unsuccessful suitor who jumped at the chance to be with the girl he liked, agreeing to raise someone else's child (a terrible price for any man) in exchange for basic human decency - being considered the father of the kid so that kid doesn't totally disrespect him when he gets older. I think it's very reasonable. Why did he "step up"? It's practically confirmed he never really loved Emily and only got with her because Santi got with a girl he was crushing on. He took on Emily and the MC not out of love, but out of spite against Santi. His true feelings toward MC are shown when he assaults him when confronted about his infidelity.
We're also told Andres was going to reveal the truth when MC got old enough so Emily left it to him, only he neglected to do it.
Andres is basically Zack from 20 years prior. A undersexed, overly jealous rodent who had to blackmail a single mother into marriage.
Anyway, whatever Andres's motivations, I don't care, as I'm viewing the situation from the position of the child - and in the child's POV, Andres was the one putting in hard work (and raising a child is hard), each day, for years, including when Emily gave up on the kid, while Santiago was out there fucking 18-year-olds and enjoying a luxurious lifestyle. Sure, the thought of his son crossed his mind once or twice, and he even asked Emily about that… But did he do anything else? No. If he was truly the father, he'd move mountains to be with his son. Did he do that? No. It's true, Andres and the MC had some altercations lately, but to me, he's still his dad. Besides, the conflict enabled the MC to continue his relationship with Nikki, so I'm even low-key grateful for that.
I'd really want to be able to tell Santi, "You're not my father. You're just some asshole who fucked Mom, long ago". Too bad the MC isn't written the way that'd be fitting for that.
Ironically, the only way I'd forgive Santiago is if he truly turned out to be Alexis's and Layla's dad/stepdad, so that he, too, got to experience the hardships of fatherhood. But by jossing that cliffhanger, Nyx made it completely impossible.
