Not sure that's what has everyone hung up, it's more that the game hasn't exactly been about making them worse, we haven't reached the dark part of the game supposedly, this is still the harem phase, if we were in the dark phase and this scene popped up i don't think anyone would be struggling with it in a narrative sense.
YES, if this were the Dark Beauty route, it makes narrative sense, but this scene doesn't make sense now! Because of current events it doesn't make sense that this scene would happen now, it seems like it was done just to shock people and make us want to give up 100%

Also this is a story about broken people licking each others wounds and becoming better
Wow, I 100% disagree this is what the story is about. Especially in regards to Akira, whose half-hearted attempts to "get better" were brutally executed along with Maya.

But also, if you think you will not like how the story will develop after that choice then... don't make it??? Like, damn, no one is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to play 100%, I hope. You'll miss the developments that will happen as the result of it, but if you don't want them, then it's not a punishment?

Well... that was an update... and has horrible as it was, i've got to give Selly some chops for that scene, he captured the vacant disassociation pretty damn well... but i really can't fathom how this is the green path at this point in the game, i can't see how this could ever develop things well with Io and it's going to come out to Uta eventually too, she's already noticing her distance... the choice to leave makes far more narrative sense to the point where it's almost like Selly changed his mind and has decided against the green path being the 'true' path for his story... fixing Io with sex sounds like a bullshit fantasy fix for a child rape victim, and doesn't fit with the way Selly has treated the topic in the past, if Io does actually improve going down this path it's going to feel contrived and hollow...
Nah, her arc's gonna get darker. That shit happened in her safest space, all her tools, the smells, they're all going to remind her of that moment. He took everything she had left in that moment.

We watched the start of a death spiral today.

I agree with you, that's the big issue. Io can't really be changed by this either way because they'd be way too different narrative paths.

Well, I said this before, but there is no choice in LiL. There is only: you either read the story Selebus wants to tell, or you read a poorly made version of it where things make less sense. I missed the event after seeing it once too, I get it, that's just the reaction any sane human being would have there. But that's just a fantasy at the end of the day.

I personally think that both outcomes have great potential, but it is glaringly obvious that having a choice here will cheapen the Io narrative. I understand why Selebus does this (to force player reflection), and I continue not agreeing that the damage the story takes is worth it.

I have no idea why do people think this is a game about making people better.
I'm pretty sure that's not what is going on, it's more about the narrative of the story and how it might put holes into it. Just before the event with Io, you are with Yasu talking about how you must swim and keep doing the same that you were trying to avoid and then you are thrown into a situation where it makes you question whether that makes sense in a narrative way, I mean, most of this chapter has been about how he wants to be better and now you go and dick the one person who clearly doesn't want anything to do with it.

And as Bingoogus said before, Sel is a stubborn person who -despite giving you choices- has a one path road you are meant to follow, and we have no clear evidence to disprove that so far. This choice is the one that will give more impactful indication as to whether or not following the green path is actually needed or not IMO.

To be honest I am yet to play the last 3 or 4 updates prior to this due to work and other commitments but seeing what some have said regarding events in this latest update and how they feel incongruous with the narritive thus far, is it not possible that the memories/consequences of this event could be... deleted (for want of a better term) at the next reset anyway?

I feel like I remember there being precedent for that earlier in the story.

Has Sel flat-out said we're not in the Dark phase yet? Or are people still insisting we're still in the harem phase because there are still girls he hasn't fucked yet? Because that was an asinine argument when it was first put forward, and it's just as asinine now.

It's been pretty evident since Halloween that we're on a downhill slide, thematically, so pushing Io onto a death spiral doesn't feel out of place at all.

The thing is though is that there really is a 'right' choice based on the information we have at hand, until the game is complete we can't know 100% but we've been punished before for missed scenes and the game makes a point multiple times about how our choices are just illusions and don't matter and the main one is simply that it's missed content, missing content, not different content, Selly doesn't split the game for A and B, there's just A or nothing, at most a comment on how we fucked up not choosing A. The only intelligent option for any player at this point in the game's development is to always assume the green path is the intended path until some evidence comes along to challenge that, and this latest Io scene is the first and only potential indicator for that possibility we have so far and as for making anything of it... we just have to wait and see.
Selebus told once that green path is about always taking worst possible decisions. As far as it likely obviously not correct, it is substantional.

Also, I am feeling a bit lonely with my decision to not rape Io. I made it more out of curiosity though, I expected that there is no actual choise at all

The Dark-Dark route starts after Chapter 5 by the recentish word of Sel.

Well that can't be true, being a bad homie causes you to miss scenes and i'd find it very easy to argue being a bad homie is the worst choice to make.
Scenes or events? I thought bad homie only changed dialogue (you get to kiss Rin if you're a good homie, but that's just a scene within an event). For instance, in this update we find out what happens with the trading nudes choice with Otoha (amazing outcome btw). But the event happens regardless.

Edit: I think it would be cool if at the end of LiL there was a counter of how much of a jackass Akira was when he had a choice, and that unlocked a secret choice at the end or something. But that's probably my rpg mentality at play here.

I think Sel said a while ago that """"canon"""" route, the one Akira as a character in his head would go down to, is 100% except bad homie, but it was a while ago.

You lose some events, yes.
