I'm not sure which rag you're looking at. It is by the suitcases partially covered by the inventory overlay. The rag and sticks used to craft the tent don't show up until after you go to sleep by the old campfire.

Did anyone get any farther after crafting the tent? Looks like the next thing to do is to craft an axe, but I don't find any new items to interact with.

all i can do is collect rags.
Use the magnifier glass to check the suitcases. go back and pick up the rag.
now use the magnifer again to look at the suitcases, go back and pick up another rag.
repeate.
i now have 1 set of sticks and 6 rags.

How is this a final version. did the dev even do a test. looks like this game is buggy.

Interesting, this Taboo Tales Dev team churn out a couple crap games a month on Steam, but there is almost nothing taboo in their games.
They are almost all the same though. Eye candy with bare bones story, ruined by terrible, buggy, mini games.
