Here are some possible solutions:

There's also Spyware software, if its a separate program, but usually packaged in with anti-virus programs, and any firewall could wreck havoc on the games files, denying the game permission to change files. But you should get some pop warnings while the game loads. I've had this issue with my firewall but when I'm offline and playing I switch it to 'silent mode' or I can just shut it down or quit the firewall and reload it after I'm done playing.

Not if you put the right mapping.xml in the right place. @Carlo S probably has the good stuff ready for you in a few minutes, but if you wanna try it yourself I think the op should have the .xml file and you just have to extract it to where the .exe is.
