Here's why I think it became popular, basically brand and timing.
When the 0.1 of Milfy City came out it came at a peculiar time and with a great start
1) From someone who already had a reputation of making these games
2) Switching over to Renpy while the majority was still using the hated RPG Maker
3) Incest I think it was not as overused in that moment, also Patreon I am fairly sure hadn't started on cracking it heavily just yet
4) Great looking renders and actual animations
Again consider the context, take the most liked F95 games and consider how young they all are, now consider how most games were: 1) Using RPGM 2) No animations 3) Very Sober looking renders
5) A first release with lots of content and characters and the gameplay being a far cry from the long walks in RPGM and the money grinding.
Unfortunately ICSTOR blew its chance, it still made and is making money, but if he actually took it as seriously as a job should be he would have made more, money makes money, look at Phillygames, who said that he pretty much blew what he made off Depraved awakening by licensing music for Broken Dreams which is giving him more than 10 times what he was making while developing DA.
What does he want? I don't know but I can't see this scenario in the long term being more rewarding than if he had actually worked on the game.

yes he had a very bad reputation as someone who finishes games in the middle of the story because he "got bored" from the beginning I knew it would end this way because it ALWAYS ends in his case ...

in my opinion it remains a great game, which clearly does not focus on the plot and on the choices, and being a sand box it is inevitable that it is.
from an aesthetic point of view it is still among the best games, and the plot is more than enjoyable.
even as an abandoned game I would still recommend it

You are highly optimistic.
from an aesthetic point of view the game has nothing new... the render quality is pretty much Standard about now, there are few titles that beat this level, but those are currently considered the greatest titles aswell... animations are non existent as we only see several pics being interchanged at a higher pace... this level is actually far below standard now adays.
The last Caroline Update was incredibly disapointing both in content quality and story...
at this point I would note MC if someone asked for similiar titles but warn them about the Quality drop as the game proceeds... let alone that it is unfinished and likely never will be, yet I would never recoment it to anyone

at most we have different tastes.
we are talking about a game that has stopped for a year, that there is something technically better seems normal to me, but are there so many titles? I do not think so

I agree on the taste, yet have to point out that the game had already been paused for more than a year before the last Update was "completed"
Just take a look in the "latest Update" section of the Game Forum and Filter on RenPy and VN... the number of potential games with atleast equal if not better quality will last you a live time... and most are IC themed aswell since it apparently had been the most desired genre for a while now.
If you have a bit of time also include Unity.
Aproximitally 5 years ago when MC started there wasn't much competition and even less with equal quality... but those times had passed a while ago... while ICStor keeps producing the same old stuff... never improving either in quality, nor in quantity (actually deteriorating in both)

IF you want to blindly believe in any deadline ICStor gives... actually if you did you would have played 0.7 last year around this time

my experience in this kind of games is quite limited, without lockdown I probably would have continued to ignore its existence.
to date I will have played about twenty titles, and giving precedence to the complete ones, many are not very recent, so I take your word for the quality of the new titles.
but if every half word about this game generates a lot of clamor it obviously enjoys a certain number of fans / nostalgics (including me too)
if it were just an old and outdated game, the fact that it was most likely abandoned would be good news

It's called "time dilation." Clearly, he's operating in the vicinity of a black hole, and the closer he gets to that black hole, the more time seems to slow according to observers who are outside the field of effect. Essentially, as he continues to spiral in closer and closer, we'll see his approach to the event horizon slow more and more, to the point where it almost seems to approach infinity to get there.
The render quality of this game was top when it was released and it is top now. The render engine is raytrace, so tell me a game above that. Anyway, the technology you use is not really the most important thing. I can render you a cube with fancy lights in Full HD, but we're not talking about this. Textures? character detail? I think this game is top. Illumination, scene arrangement, scene direction... I think it's pretty OK for a sandbox game. Now you can say you don't like it, your opinion is totally respectable, but technically it is a top game, and that's not an opinion, it's a fact. Now you can name 5 AVN's (modern or not) which are above this game in aesthetics quality beyond any doubt.
Now I think you're talking about a different game. That's not only false, but also this game is one of the few you can see well done kissing (I only saw them in this game and in Timelapse, tbh), and animated characters don't have half of their bodies frozen, as most of other games have. There are characters (Linda and Caroline, for instance) with about 10 scenes with 7 animations each, this is 150 different animations both. And yeah, I'm talking about animations with more than 100 frames. Really, I think you're talking about a different game.
You can like the game or not, you can like the style, the characters, the story, the ambientation, or you can hate them. You can hate the dev, too, I've heard he lies too much and works too few. That's what tastes and opinions are about. But technically this is still one of the top AVN's out there. I don't think that can be arguable objectively.

At this point I would say you'll find more fans of throwing their hate and disdain on ICStor than those of the game itself in this thread.
I can't count to many AVNs... some of the following are far above the Level of Milfy City some are atleast equals... and I am still not talking about the technical level but the artistic level
