I very much doubt ICSTOR is the only one testing for bugs, so some more people have a copy of alpha/beta version and they released the list of scenes. (not that I believe the list to be true or not, but it's far from impossible for someone to know what scenes this update will have)

Testing the code while rendering isn't a bad practice. It essentially allows you to see if the technical side of the game works before slotting in the animations. After all, these are only media files being played, so there isn't any debugging to do there.
