You are nearly correct on all counts. You do not have to be mean to Clara nor have you to completely close off sexy times with her. Some events, e.g. going for Clara during the dance at the frat party, count much and make her more resistant to others.
Nevertheless you are right that the loyal paths, with or without daring dress subpath/white or black dress, are harder to get on and need careful juggling of decisions to keep on it. I made several posts with tipps how to do that.
You are right that sometimes it is good to take a "tactical hit" on the friendship level, where it does not impact much, e.g. joking about a porn movie at the TV evening.
I found it easier to get a loyal Clara with the daring dress path active, meaning Clara finds out she likes to show off and you start to like that she shows off, but that is all she does with others.
If you like sharing or NTR, then the game becomes a lot easier for you.

One thing to say about Misfits part 2 is that we finally have a few very specific decisions for the loyal paths. Yay about that!
For example, if you help Clara against the grabbers on the bus a couple times it reduces current lust and slut level by several points and makes it clear in word and picture that Clara is very happy with you helping her. It even raises just(!) temp lust level later on, making it easier for you to get close with Clara.
Depending on what paths we players are on, there are some basic traits of the characters becoming more clear.
What happened to Amy with the biker left a mark on her, she is likely getting wilder, despite hating what happened to her. Clara as a virgin is curious, but due to her little experience rather easy to influence. She actually prefers a loyal relationship (a lot of the sharing or NTR stuff happens by people abusing her kindness and arousal level) if you play towards this and has a hidden like for showing off, which we players can help emerge too. There is also the option to play towards sharing and/or NTR.
Betsy on the other hand knows exactly what she wants at this point in her life and that is mostly friends with benefits. From the 3 main girls, she is the most worldly and experienced.

Nice to see Pixie getting in the mix, I think she's maybe my favourite... though I do like Amy too as she was in the last game and seeing Clara turn into a slut as she's the token gf... even Bean's alright as I'm liking the rough path that's just developed with her.

Hmm, I try to keep Clara in some kind of limits where she should behave like a "good girlfriend" but with each update it's getting harder.
Now, either you skip content and she acts like a nun, or you play her games, and she teases you and creates naughty situations.

As I mentioned in several earlier posts, a big problem is the current lust score (the one on the kiss lips). Depending on the situation if it is greater than 7-8, the person in question gets aroused and can be influenced towards sexual acts or starts so him/herself.
If you want to keep your girlfriend or friend (e.g. Amy) loyal, you either keep this score low or you have to save them.
For Clara specifically, there are some events counting more, e.g. dancing with her at the early frat party or keeping the grabbers on the bus at bay repeatedly, which fortify her loyalty and liking of you. It sometimes lowers slut and current lust level, in others there is no effect on stats, but it seems to flag towards loyalty, since Clara then cuts off stuff on her own, e.g. at the bowling.
The biggest problem for us players is a situation in which Clara has high current lust, we are not right there and the other person preys on her kindness and/or will to save her Dad.
As I wrote earlier, I found it easier to have a loyal Clara who is on the daring dress/show off path. That functions quite well, even if she can be a tease then. This seems to be a trait of her that is pushed by the dev a bit, since the Clara of "12 Days" has it too.
The "12 Days" Clara can be quite a tease, gets off on showing off, but she has an upper limit of what she does with persons not her boyfriend/husband: That is a handjob. As Clara says in "12 Days" to Amy, "it is just a handjob, that is not cheating." That is very specific and seems to be the red line Clara nad her boyfriend have agreed on. Despite Clara having the option and possibility to go further several times in "12 Days", stops at the handjob as the max.
It seems the dev tries to form Clara towards this, at least partially depending on player input, in "Misfits" as well.

It says I missed a scene on the bus with Clara because she needs a "9" lust level. I've been pretty relaxed in me letting Clara do naughty stuff, but I think my game level is only a 7. Is there a way to easily change that and/or unlock that scene? Thanks.

You only need a 9+ current(!) lust level (the number on the kiss lips) for that, not general slut level. You can raise Clara´s lust level in various ways, e.g. with kissing or let the grabbers fondle her on the bus.
But as an info, if you clear off the grabbers on the bus a couple times, Clara will like ths very much, which will lower slut and current lust level by several points. Important for those player who want a loyal Clara or a Clara, who only does sexy stuff with the MC and what he likes her doing with others, e.g. showing off.

I tried the saveitonline or whatever it was. And I couldn't get it to work. Could be I was messing with the wrong variable. Is it Clara hot? Because it's a 7 in the game. I can let them grope her for an 8, but then it doesn't go above that. Maybe I missed something earlier before that scene. Will see if I can get that raised.
Edit: Well, I started the game again and it keeps putting Clara's lust level at 7. The scene increases it by 1. At least when I've played it I can't get higher than 8. So I keep missing out on the extra scene. Maybe it's a Patreon thing? Or I am just not doing something right (or wrong?)

I had some troubles with her variables as well. I used this (taken from my past post here)
"for anyone wondering, the command is $claraGirl.upHotOnly(x) - this adds x to lust, not sure if it wont break anything, so use at your own risk"
Not sure if its the variable you want changed. I think I came upon what to change by going into dev mode and looking what variables kept popping up as I made game decisions (at least I think it was the dev mode).
I guess you know how to change variables. If you dont, download unren and enable the console through that.

I don't use cheats, because the excitement and pleasure of personal choice of ways of passing the game is lost! And, if the result is immediately indicated, then pictures with text cease to be a game, but turn into a simple visual novel! I'm trying to guess further events and the behavior of the characters! For example, in the next update there will be a beach, a garage, a party at Gordon's and a job at a cafe. Clara quickly learns to manipulate men! Clara didn't make a surprise for Max in the evening! Clara began to show an increasing interest in respectable men, and in the future, using light flirting and dexterous hands, she learned how to earn money. Smart-ass beautiful girl Clara is saving her virginity for a special occasion!
