There are always bugs in this game....its a common thing. You honestly can't get pissed about bugs in a beta test version...there will be some, or alot that simply don't understand the concept of a "test" version of the game.

Ehm at the start of the game, you can change the name.
At last in the past version at the start the game ask for a Name.

do you need to restart the game for 1.8 or can you continue from 1.7 ?

According to the changelog, you can use a save from 1.7.
