Yeah, it's been a while since the game started development. Though the longer we wait, the better I say. Already available versions were promising and the updates the dev is giving us on ci-en only go for the better.

I think you are freeing them. Pretty sure you get souls when they dissappear. Been a while since I played though.
That doesn't seem to work once you click on other tabs in that I menu though, like Spells etc. Every time I try to equip or change something I get hopelessly stuck. Space gets ignored once I've entered a tab and clicked on something. Been playing the whole game with default stuff.
Don't use mouse in the menu. It bugs out and breaks. E and Space keys are enough to navigate the menu perfectly fine.
even if you don't use the mouse it could have a chance to bug out if you change it too quickly

Starting weapon is actually one of the 3 best weapons in the entire game. Other weapons either too slow for you to hit anything or deal miniscule damage.So basically, it's mostly broken

The katana in the third save is the most useless piece of garbage ive ever used to fight in my life. This is just my opinion.
The unupgraded katana is better to use since you don't need to learn an entirely new method of 'stab-happy-festival' but, in each version the aerial cut for the katana is good due to its decent range and damage. On that note, I usually use the starting sword or katana (not the upgraded quick draw version) as my main weapons since most weapons either do too little dps, have a lack of proper range, or use up too much stamina for a slow swing that might miss if you're not a newtype or used to the movesets. I do dick around every now and then with the staff because, well, flying stabbings and the stone club due to it feeling cathartic to whack things with what amounts to Flint the Time Detective's dad.
