finished the game just now and I must say two things:
- Stabby Mike carried the game on his back
- the best Naruto reference in this is definitely Gaara's love kanji on Aiko's shoulder
other than that game's great, play it if you haven't already

My main emotion is disappointment and confusion at the high rating. I'm curious if people feel like I'm off the mark on any of these points.

By Ren'Py 3D VN porn standards its one of the better one cause it does have choices and is complete unlike 90% of this type of games where its ether theirs only like 1-2 choice and you'd be done is 30 min or an hour or they have been in development for years and theirs not much progress.
I do find their second game to be better as the girls doesn't really ride your dick immedietly( like majority haven't ridden your dick actually mostly minor characters but major characters they haven't) unlike this game where they pretty much wanted to suck your dick immedietly. I do find it longer as it feels like I spend the same amount of time playing this game as I played their new like maybe 50% finish game.
even though its not done yet you'd at least spend a few days playing it unless you play none stop then like a whole day will make you finish 0.4 their new game should be linked in the description page. the model of the girls are also better and the men are not disgusting to look at their now average looking but that's better than ugly.

Damn, I have never played a game THIS GOOD before. Forget the sex scenes, everything else of the story rolled itself to the amazing ending we got here. Caribdis , congratulations on making such a great game - the more I played, the more I wanted to play it... I was so sad when it endend XD.

Just in case anyone is interested, Andi Shearer has a 2000s punk version of "Ill be right behind you, Josephine". Man! This song HAS to make at least a cameo in Eternum - a car song that "randomly" plays throught the game XD. Come on Caribdis, you made this song memorable for life!
I remember a while back the dev was thinking about continuing to add after stories for oial after production, haven't heard anything since but I'd assume that's more cause they're focusing on eternum rn. You could probably get a better answer if you hit up their discord.
I do believe it deserves its high rating when compared to other games in its genre. Like you said the plot is a bit bare bones when it comes to the drama side considering the context of fighting a cult (granted the bad endings and choices are quite fucked), but I believe the appeal of the game to people wasn't really the cult stuff, but the interactions between mc, their daily life and the other cast, with humor that appealed to the players. It was a short and sweet story with humor that people enjoyed. Could it have been better? Definitely, but factoring in that this was made by one person and this was their first game, most people weren't expecting much.
A big plus that probably contributed to its high score is that the game is finished. It was first published here in 2019 and finished around 2021. I feel like for a lot of people, seeing a good complete game in 2 years was already deserving enough for a high award considering the amount of games that are not finished, have been abandoned, or have turned into cash grabs after their rise to popularity. Hell imo any good game that maintains its level of quality and is complete deserves 4 stars minimum given the amount of games that have just become cash grabs.
I think your disappointment could be that it just wasn't the type of game you were expecting based on its description and you had higher expectations for it considering its high reviews, which is all fair. I similarly did not enjoy some games that are most liked/top ranked on this site as they just didn't appeal despite their high ratings. My advice would just be to take the ratings with a grain of salt and go in without expectations.
Just curious, what other VNs have you played? Because if this wasn't great, I would love to play what you've played! I have a hard time finding great games and while I really enjoyed this, I'd love finding more great ones.
