I'd just dig through your save files & edit your Ian's Athletics stats to be higher. I can't give a step-by-step for that, but it's probably easy enough with a little digging.
Last time I tried to edit the save files for this game, I broke the game or broke the saves...not sure. Don't remember. But, it didn't work, basically. And trust me, that thought did cross my mind. lol
Maybe my stats just aren't good enough. But, I refuse to continue the story with a loss. lol

EDIT: I changed every stat I could find that had to do with the fight and it didn't do jack shit. Think I'm just done with it.
Anybody have save right after winning the fight, I'd love to have it. But, I'm not gonna keep going at this fight. After a couple hours of trying multiple different choices, in multiple different orders, it ends in either getting knocked out, or the opponent landing nothing and still winning.
It's ignorant AF.

Did you enable console commands and set ian_athletics = x where X is the level of athletics? Just set it to ten, win the fight and set it back to whatever level you're currently at. It won't change the XP value for the stat, so you can win that way.

If you don't know how to enable Console Commands: go to the renpy folder > common > look for console.rpy text file and edit Console Commands = False to Console Commands = True save and when you open the game Shift + O will open it. No need to edit entire save files and risk breaking the game.

Or alternatively accept that the Ian you've created doesn't have the Athletics, or the Grappling / Striking experience to win the tournament and move on.

(1) This tournament fight is ridiculous. I'm not gonna spend hours on end reloading a save just to keep failing, regardless which choices I make. I see multiple different suggestions in the thread on how to win, but none of them are helping.

When I guard, the opponent just dances around. When I provoke too much, the ref says he will disqualify me.
If I just attack, he lights me up. I try to tackle him and he doesn't go down.
It just seems like a losing battle, regardless what I do.
Is there any definite choice pattern that will win this fight?
I'm on the verge of simply asking for a save right after the fight, with a win. But, then that will negate any choices I've made in the past with my 2 different saves, and I will have to just live with someone else's choices.

(2) My 2 different saves are 1 with an exclusive Lena relationship and the other with an open Lena relationship, but when I load the exclusive save, it immediately takes me to fucking Cindy. Is this a bug, or is cheating unavoidable, regardless my previous choices?

This update is seriously getting on my nerves.
just go to the gym whenever you get chance and train straight grappling, was ez.

I know how to open and use the console. I can't always figure out the commands, though. Thanks.

That would require starting a new game, and training well before the fight. My saves are before the fight. I'm fine. Not redoing anything when I'm this far into the game.

So, apparently, UnRen does NOT in fact enable this console. Not sure if its broken, outdated, or just doesn't work with certain versions of Ren'Py, but...I am trying to follow your instructions to open the common file but I don't see any line that says "Console Commands = False", and I've searched for a while.

This crap is making me feel seriously dumb cause I've never struggled with any game like this.

I've changed all the console commands I can think of to 10. Then tried changing them to 100. They don't change the outcome of anything in the fight, at all.
ian_athletics = x
ian_wit = x
ian_grapple = x
ian_will = x
ian_strength = x (never know lol)
Literally, anything I click on, the opponent is like Superman. And "Tap Out" shouldn't even be an option, cause ain't nobody gonna tap out and end it. If I end up having to start over, I'll wait till the game is finished, cause by that time, there may be sufficient walkthrough/tips available. Or maybe some saves to use. But I'm done.

For everyone struggling with the tight, there is a variable called jiujutsu and kickboxing that denotes your skill with each. If you set them to 5, you should pass all the checks in either scenario.

ian_athletics = X will max out at 10, going higher will likely just break the game.

ian_fit = X is a hidden stat that affects his endurance during the fight I believe it maxes out at 5, but so long as you don't put in a super high number it shouldn't break anything.

jiujitsu = x if you want a grappling focused Ian, can only naturally get to 4

kickboxing = x if you want a striking Ian, can naturally get to 5 I wouldn't put either jiujitsu or kickboxing higher than 5 if you're going to edit.

Here is the sequence if you want to win with grappling.

I can't speak for anyone that went Striker, but if you went Grapple here is how you win ezpz.

First Round:
Guard > Provoke > Grapple on the counterattack > Trip or Throw > Secure the Position > Go for a Choke > Squeeze > Tie Him Up. This results in taking one minor hit in the last 30 secs before the round ends.

Second Round:
You get clobbered in the opening no matter what you pick, I usually pick block because it looks like you take the least damage. Attack > Grapple > Trip Him > Pin Him Down > Pin Him Down (again) > Go For a Choke > Keep Squeezing > Keep Squeezing! (again)

And that's how you win taking minimal hits as a Jiu-Jitsu specialist. You can do it all with only Athletics

Here is the sequence if you want to win with striking.

For those of you still struggling with the fighting, I decided to make a guide to help with it.

For this playthrough I'm playing with an Ian that is a complete fighter with a focus on kickboxing.
Here is how I achieved this:

In your first appearance at the gym, after sparring with Jeremy, he will offer to go again. Select that option. Wen will then offer some grappling tips. Take him up on the offer.

When you first encounter Robert, you want to intervene and tell him not to touch Perry. This will start a fight. to get the best outcome for this fight, select the kick option.

When next you visit the gym, Jeremy will bring up your fight with Robert. Wen will offer you more wrestling training. Take it.
Whenever you are presented with the option to go to the gym, always pick it.

When Yuri comes back from Thailand, he will conduct a session with you.

Based on some decisions you made in the story (Lena sleeps with Robert) you will be given a chance to fight Robert again. To start the fight shove him or insult him. To win the fight, pick these options in the following order. Attack>Punch>Guard up>Evade>Punch>Provoke>Evade>punch. This will result in a flawless victory for you taking no damage and knocking out Robert.

You will eventually be given the choice to either stick with kickboxing or focus in Ju-jitsu. Stick with kickboxing. Yuri will then teach you combinations. Follow his instructions to learn them.

At this point whenever you visit the gym, despite choosing to stick with kickboxing, when Yuri is not around, you will automatically train wrestling with Wen and when he is around you train boxing instead.

You will get the chance to spar with Jeremy Again. Select these options to get the best outcome: Guard up>Attack>Grapple>Provoke>pick whatever. The result will always end with Jeremy knocking you down but commending you on how much you have improved.

It goes without saying that if you want participate in the tournament you have to pick that option.

In the final session at the gym before the tournament, Yuri will tell you that your striking is above average and with some work can compete at the Amateur level. Wen will say that your grappling is sufficient against most opponents in the ring. You will then be given the option to improve striking or grappling or master striking or grappling. However you will not be able to improve striking or grappling since they are already at a very decent level. You can then spend a will point to either master Kickboxing or Ju-jitsu. (Pick whatever. I picked kickboxing).

At the tournament, after Jeremy's fight before your fight starts, wen will ask you if your ready. Pick the option: "Any Advice?" this will unlock the ability to "Test the waters".

First lets start with Grappler Ian ( I did this with an Ian focused on kickboxing so if you picked grappling you may get better results than me)

When the fight starts, pick "Guard up" first. Nothing will happen.

Second pick "Guard up" again and you will be presented with this screen:
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
Pick the option to kick him.

For your third action you want to still go with "Guard up" but after your first two actions you get random scenarios for your third option based on what your opponent does.
I will tell the the options to pick for the best result now.

When you see this:
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
Pick Defend which will give you this screen
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
Combo gives the best result but you want to conserve stamina or the first round so pick strike since it's the second best option.

For this:
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
Pick Dodge then and you can either pick combo or strike next but as I said, since you want to conserve stamina in this round, pick strike.

For this:
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
Select Stay still then Strike next.

That about covers all scenarios for your third choice.

For your 4th choice(when the clock is at 1:30), select provoke. This will the give you the choice to either Strike back or Grapple. Select Grapple and Trip him.
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
(You can also throw him but that costs more stamina but does more damage to him) then select Secure position>Go For a Choke>Squeeze. The clock will run out with Ian almost submitting his opponent ending the first round.

If you have done everything correctly then Ian will tell Wen that he didn't get it with anything significant and he still has gas in the thank. Wen will inform Ian that he is currently destroying his opponent.
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.

When the second round starts, your opponent will bombard you with shots. You will then get this screen:
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
You wanna pick dodge then Counter:
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.

From this point on just pick "guard up" and you'll get one of the previous scenarios above. This time don't be afraid to let the combinations fly.

Eventually your opponent will get either hurt or tired. Wen will then signal you to finish him:
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.

Select Attack>Grapple>Feint and Shoot. You'll get this screen:
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
Pin him down first then go for the submission and that will be all she wrote for red shorts.

For Kickboxing Ian It's really simple.

In the first round Select "Attack" first then "Test the waters".
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
>
Second select "Attack" again then "Strike"

Then from then on just pick guard up and you will get one of the same scenarios in the Wrestling section. Pick the same option and be conservative with the combos.

After you hit him or the third time, your opponent will lash out at you. Do not worry he won't hit you with anything significant.

When only 0:30 minutes is left on the clock, select "provoke">"Strike Back".

At half time Wen will once again inform Ian he is destroying his opponent.

At the start of the second round, your opponent will lash out again.
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
This time you want to counter straight away. He will get two hits off you but there is a chance he might be hurt after this exchange based on how many times you hit him last round.
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.

If he isn't hurt then Attack and strike him once then he will be hurt.

From here you can select Attack>Grapple>Feint and Shoot>Pin him down>Go for a Submission and end the fight by submission. Or alternatively you can Attack then Strike. He will take you down.
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
But do not worry just select "Reverse the position" after and you're good.
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
Sometimes he will escape here. Other times he becomes trapped. If he is trapped, you can select Pin him down>Go for a submission to end the fight by submission.

If he escaped, both of you will stand back up and Wen will give the signal again to finish him off.

Just select Attack>Attack until he can't stop you no more then you'll get this screen:
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
From then Ian will perform an automatic combo to knock out his opponent.

I didn't intend for this to be so long. Sorry about that lol.

Edit: Due to a comment made by What's New in the thread, I found out there is a way to win in the first round by Kick Boxing.
The trick is to put your foot on the gas and not worry about stamina management and always try to hit him in the face and Combo as much as possible. At 1:00 or 0:30 mark, he will be hurt enough for you to finish him. To do this just select Attack>Strike . There is an element of rng to it but here's what worked for me: Attack>Strike>Guard up>Punch>Attack>Strike>Guard up> Defend>Combination>Attack>Strike. I am yet to figure how you can do this for Grappling.

so...thanks for the details. That's appreciated...but...
what exactly do you mean by "one of the same scenarios pick the same option.."? I get several scenarios and they all end up with me getting lit up.
I also changed all my variables to the numbers you listed...4s and 5s.
I'm now starting to think mine is bugged, in some way.
BTW, I've followed these steps exactly, in both grappling and fighting and neither ends up winning.

I didn't write that guide, I simply quoted it. You would have to ask the author varpep.

I thought I was replying to them. My mistake. Maybe they'll see you quoted them and see this. If not, oh well. I'll check back when completed and maybe there'll be a walkthrough with those details in it. But, I've spent a couple days, and countless hours total on this one damn scenario, and can't get a win. It's basically "deal with the fact the game won't allow you to win, when everyone else CAN win, or just quit the game all together. Or hell, maybe I'll get bored one of these days and start over and try to up my stats naturally since the console isn't doing jack shit. lol

Each of those events are happen at random. I just gave the best choices to make. If you are still getting lit up, your athletics, striking or grappling is probably not high enough. For the choices to work you need to be at least a little bit competent at striking or wrestling. I see you have been struggling with the tournament. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Yeah, I think you need Ian's athletic stat to be as high as possible, to make it easier. If you decided for Ian to take part in the tournament, you really needed for him to choose additional training sessions when that was an option.

I mean, I'm not exactly a fan of combat games and I'm not entirely sure I understand the mechanics behind it. So I just made as many saves as I could during the fight, and worked through the options till I found a route that worked. It just takes a little patience and perseverence. I think the more you do it, the easier it becomes to make the right choices. It's certainly way easier than the fight game on 'Being a Dik', which I've never been able to fathom.

What are you all on about: Eva did CAMEOS OF GGGB game chars as FAN SERVICE TO YOU WHINERS!
in last update and now you cry for more? Let her finish her game, will ya!

Those were all cameos. Eva is already swamped with these ”limiting only two main characters” - quit yer whining!
I was saying want more Gillian content, and with each elapsed update essentially meaning there is less and less potential that would happen, began to wonder if it is possible I am wrong, and whether it's not unprecedented that EK retro adds scenes . Only mentioned GGGB to ask those who were following the game early on, if they witnessed such late phase retroactive additions...

If you decided for Ian to take part in the tournament, you really needed for him to choose additional training sessions when that was an option.
The extra training session in Ch.7 is after various bug fixes especially beneficial for Ian who focuses on jiujitsu: provided he did well in spar with Jeremy in Ch.10 it grants him an extra point in kickboxing between Ch.10 and 11, allowing him to optionally achieve 4 skill in both kickboxing and jiujitsu (if he chooses to "improve striking" rather than "master grappling" in Ch.11) which is a nicely rounded out, strong build.

You can even reach the final point with the two improved disciplines and choose which of the two you master.

You train low kicks, you train grappling, you train Jiu Jitsu the first time Wen offers it, then you focus on kickboxong and you arrive at the final choice with both disciplines improved and ready to master the one you want. Of course, it requires choosing the option of spending extra time in the gym.

This... doesn't sound right, at least with the full playthrough done with the current game build -- if you choose to "focus on kickboxing" in chapter 5 this resets Ian's jiujitsu back to 1:
Python:
        "I had to decide what to focus on from now on."
        menu:
            "Stick with kickboxing":
                $ renpy.block_rollback()
                $ jiujitsu = 1
// ...
            "Focus on Jiu-Jitsu":
                $ renpy.block_rollback()
                $ jiujitsu = 2
Then in Ch.10 you lose out on bonus point from extra training which requires jiujitsu > 1, you get +1 point if you did decent in spar with Jeremy and another +1 during regular training session for 3 points total, while you need 4 points to unlock mastery training.
