To try and explain it...

Hunter has been drugging their food, drinks and hygine products from the very first day he turned up. Last chapter it is revealed he is "drugging" the very air they breathe. In I think almost all the scenes in this chapter we see a shot from inside the vents and sometimes a hissing noise, indicating something being released.
