This games saga saddens me. It wasn't perfect, no game is perfect, but it was a great game. The story was original. The renders were beautiful, and the characters were interesting and diverse. The pacing was not bad either. It branched and had variables and wasn't buggy nor was it in engrish.
I think the main reason why it did not get the sort of support that it could have was mainly due to three things. Two in game elements, and one real world element.
Real world element: Covid Shutdown... People are broke and the porn budget isn't at that high on the list when they need food and shelter, but the government is like "No, you must close absolutely everything and wear a face diaper indefinitely because grandma might get sick!"
In game element 1 : The fact that half of the female love interests are not on the same continent as the protagonist other than saying goodbye at the start of the game to them. I know the story revolves around that fact and eventually they would reunite and eventually kinky fun would happen with them, but because they are so far away they dont' feel like they are a part of the main plot no matter how much they are on the phone or in a dream.
In game element 2: The game is written more so for an "intelligent player" than for a "coomer". If you want to sit down and spank the monkey this is probably not the best game for that in spite of the nice renders and some good sex scenes. The subtext elements are very deep and make you think a bit plus it has this aura of mystery that get you more thinking than horny. I'm not saying this is totally a bad thing, but I think some of the writing goes over too many people's heads so they can not fully appreciate the game. If it was dumbed down a little bit then I think it would have been more popular.
The fact of the matter is that the market is not always fair when it comes to adult games. Dark Cookie makes Summertime Saga which is a fine game indeed, and I'm not going to knock that game. Yet Dark Cookie alone is making more money (over three times more money) than Eva Kiss, Mr Dots, Decent Monkey, Lust & Passion, and RK Studios combined (Creators of Dating my daughter, sunshine love, Radiant, a wife and mother, fashion business, good girl gone bad, our red string, melody and maybe some other game I missed?) Is there anyone out, even the most die hard Sumemertime Sage fan, that would say that this game is better by more than 3 times than all of these other games combined... doubt very many would agree to that.
The Invisible Hand of the Market is largely luck based, and can be rather cruel to some while rewarding others. The man who invented the pet rock made millions of dollars. It's a fucking rock... he didn't even super glue googly eyes on them or anything and just put them in a box and made millions of dollars.
It just so happens that this creator did not have good luck on his side. He rolled the dice and he lost. It can be very expensive in assets, hardware, electricity, and opportunity lost creating a game. 99% of game creators would be better off flipping burgers if they want to make a few bucks. Sad fact of the business.
I do appreciate that the developer has been upfront and honest about his dissatisfaction with a lack of support, and I'm sure if you asked the vast majority of game developers they would think that they are not making enough money, and that I'm sure is one of the main reasons why games are so often abandoned. So, I applaud the man in being genuine and honest, but at the same time I think to myself... Dude that's suicide from a marketing perspective. People will take his protest in not getting adequate pay as greed when he admits his game was being made at a loss. He will come off as "entitled" for wanting to make a few bucks creating something. People will take it as "You are holding the game ransom".
If your goal is 2,000 and you are making $300 a month you don't go "I need 2,000 now or I'm taking my ball and going home!" You put that bar to 500 then get it to there then you maybe bump that up to 1,000 then when you get there you bump it up to 1,500 or maybe even 2,000. It's like he was trying to take too many steps at once. Finess it up a little bit at a time step by step baby steps.
So people are going to shit on the guy, and the guy is probably not going to get much support but at the same time keep in mind it's a struggling industry that barely makes any money except for a few of the lucky ones at the top, and the time and skills that go into making a high quality game are great.
I wish the guy luck, and it would be awesome if he eventually came back to complete this game but it doesn't look good.
