Lol, he's on a new project? This patreon is the most ridiculous shit I've ever seen. Can you even hamstring your growth potential harder than this? Why would anybody support a dev that is putting this stunt? At least he's up front about it. It's not really a scummy behavior like the milker devs, but it's certainly self defeating.

I'm on the fence.

I don't agree with the reasons behind it and I think the dev has fucked over his current fans and already know if the new one doesn't take off he'll screw them over again so i'm not exactly fond of the dev or his shady BrightSunStudio approach.

We'll just have to see if the game is any good or not or if it's more abandonware.

I'm not sure why, since I definitely don't support this guy, but I received this from his Patreon:

I've just completed it. I'll be taking a rest so I can go over it one more time tomorrow before I upload it for tier: Lord Emperor.
To my patrons, it took a while, but you brought this new project to fruition when many moved on. Pat yourselves on the back and thank you.
To those of you who end up enjoying the project but didn't or couldn't pledge along the way, thank my patrons for being so stubborn and sticking with me.
This project was backed by an average of around 30 patrons through it's dev cycle. Remember that when you get to play it.
There'll be an introduction to 4 main love interests in v0.01. Some branching paths, nothing too complicated, but I think enough to give you a couple play throughs hopefully.
After that, it all depends on how many people want to see it continue.
I think it's a story worth telling. hopefully there's an audience that agrees.
One more sleep!
Silk...

I don't know man. I was all praises with Primal Instinct and still think it's one of the top visual storytelling (Chasing Sunsets grabbing the baton after this got abandoned). That patreon post has this tone. How should I put it... It's like saying we better thank his 30 acolytes for doing the ritual to bestow this incredible boon for the lowly masses lol.

The dude is talented for sure on all fronts - coding, writing, visuals, but I would be surprised if the ransomware model ever takes off lol. I understand that getting paid is the name of the game, but it's just the wrong approach to be so on the nose about it.

That dude is just such an asshole.
He values his time too much to just put out a first release and steadily work on the game at whatever pace is feasible with his job/personal life and let the Patrons come as he proves himself to be a skilled and consistent dev.
Porn games can be lucrative if you don't expect people to throw giant bags of money at you just to do literally anything.

It's not just you. Almost everyone on this thread has talked about his attitude and are in agreement with what you said. I supported him at the $2 tier again to just see what some of his posts were talking about and almost every single one of them he's talking shit about other devs and how he's the greatest gift to VNs.

" I will not be factoring in the extra renders to the goal I've set, that would only prolong the release date, and this project is already 3-4 months late due to the market's fascination with "nightmare fuel" and "walking simulators."

" Primal Instinct was always set out to be different to the usual Adult V/N's that flood the "market." It had a set story with multiple character arcs. It needed time to build. The support was small but passionate. I've mentioned many times before the only reason it lasted to v.0.07 was because the people who loved it, really loved it! But that was not enough to continue. It failed to capture enough people, and I refused to destroy the story I had set out to tell to appease potential customers who were used to the standard formula that garners the most support. No one in my shoes would have continued as long as I did."

"I believe I have a good grasp on what the market does want. I think I can do it better than most. Some might see it as arrogance, but I believe my rendering skills and story telling is top tier. I guess we'll find out soon, won't we ;)

Remember, when Heir Apparent is released, and I think most will be surprised, 30 patrons stood till the end. Compare it to other projects when you finally get to play it, and ask yourself, 30 patrons helped this first release come to fruition?"

"38 renders finished which brings the total to 230 renders.

The nightmare fuel projects still reign supreme! Devs MIA, walking simulators, mediocre characters...

Your FAP Gods have failed you!

~70 renders to go, that's somewhere around the $280 mark for v.01's completion. Does it get finished by the end of May? Up to you..."

"40 renders done this month which brings the total to 192. Nearly 2/3 of the way there. If there was enough interest I could probably have it done by the end of April. But alas, nightmare fuel projects will prevail, and this little gem will stay under the radar.

Have a good one!"

Oh and then one of my favorite worst things he's done ...

"Up until now I've been leaving each month's Wallpaper up on the feed for download. That will change starting today.
Why?
I don't think it's fair for someone who's been pledging consistently to have someone come in and pledge once, and then have access to the same wallpapers going back.
Each month's Wallpaper will remain up until the next one is uploaded.
Treat each month's Wallpaper as a collectible item.
Silk..."

The guy could bet he greatest VN creator in the world but I don't think he'll ever make it. No one wants to put their money behind an assclown like this. Like Avaron said earlier, I'm interested in his new game but I don't know if I'll even play it because in the long run I know he'll either abandon it or it'll take another 7 months to get the next update.

I admit going in I was a bit curious despite reading this game was abandoned and the Dev such as asshole, despite that, I enjoyed what I played. I thought the premise and story thus far were interesting and the models were great.

It goes without saying I'm a little disappointed I'll have to delete the game now considering the dev has all but admitted he at no point wishes to come back to it since this project seemingly left a bad taste in his mouth over his ridiculously unreal expectations and unchecked ego. What's even more frustrating is this was a good choice based VN unlike the flood of sandbox games we keep getting as of late.

At this point I highly doubt I'll even want to check out his next offering if this is same kind of bullshit we can all expect from him.

Honestly, if Silk can't create momentum behind his own game, that's no one's fault but his own. Even if what you've created is "better than most" or "far superior" in whatever ways, a part of succeeding in any industry is marketing. If you can't present a product in a way that appeals to people, if you can't excite your audience about your vision of something, you're never going to gain the traction needed to move forward. There are huge numbers of failed start-ups — mom-and-pop bakeries, unheard-of dot-coms, corner franchises — that go under, primarily because they never gain enough momentum to keep going. You have to stick with a business long enough to give it a chance, yes, but you also have to make sure people know and get excited about your business. Every business is sales, which is driven by marketing more than anything else. If you can't sell, you've got no business.

The problem is that the developer is his own worst enemy when it comes to interacting with the public.
In his own patreon post from back in Jan when he turned billing back on he mentions why he shelved Primal Instinct, due to lact of financial support. He goes on to say why he returned: "because I'm the best and outside of a number of games I can count on my hand, everything else is nightmare fuel." He goes on to list his requirements for even working on a new game, which reads like a list of demands.

The whole thing reeks of an unchecked ego and given his abandonment of this project, it wouldn't matter if he had the skills of Dr. Pink Cake mixed with Icstor and a little Veqvil on top, he'll never get public trust enough to even hit production goals.
I mean, I don't know about you, but I will never support people financially who think their god's gift to VN's when their only accomplishment is a single abandoned story. Plus, most people who pledge on patreon support multiple creators, so... by default he's basically saying all other games you support are trash but him...

As Botc76 stated, you can't demand an audience just because you're skilled, you have to spend time growing it. Not saying work for free but you have to have the passion behind a project to actually want to work on it, if you're just in it for the cash, it typically shows in your work and people respond much better to a passionate creator who might not have the best technical skill then one who has lots of skill but wont roll out of bed unless the money is right. I mean, look at how many games are made with Koi and other visual engines who do even modestly well on Patreon despite the graphics, not because of them.

Its a shame as this VN had a lot of good things going for it but yeah, in my humble opinion, the developer needs to get out of his own way in order to gain the fanbase he thinks he deserves.
.... I am God's gift to VNs.... and adult games in general... Too bad I don't utilize it properly and so no one gets to experience my glorious talent...

Jokes aside, what about someone who thinks they are gods gift, but don't abuse that, like they think they are great, but still have the maturity to be arrogant about it, and wouldn't hold that belief over anyone's head and such. tldnr: they have some humility mixed in with their pride and ego.

Although that does beg the question... can anyone really be that good and not be a self-critic? cause i find when people get that good, they always spot the mistakes they make and don't really focus on how good they are because they want to constantly improve (to the extent where some may even think they are bad when they are great). Like their work will never be good enough, because part of the passion is in improvement.

Just saw his newest game. It's a shame and for me incomprehensible why you destroy your own work with such talent by not finishing the game and instead pulling out a new one. As a developer, your not doing yourself a favor. Potential supporters see that, he can't finish his games, why should you support him then? This game has a great story that never be finished, really a shame. This is also the near future for his next project.

Yep, sad to see. I have seen a few Early Access titles pop up on Steam, I can't see why they cant try to get some more income via that way. Given the amount of content they already have it would do well I assume.

Steam is a double edged sword.

On the one hand you can release early access there and can find some success...

On the other if updates slow down they will crucify that dev, review bomb, slam them in the games forums and do everything they can to make sure people don't buy it.

People leaving shitty comments on a piracy site don't matter really. Nothing we say will do impact anything these devs make but the player base on Steam can and have completely fuck up a games momentum if they think that dev is trying to milk it.

Steam is awesome if you can out out regular updates but it isn't like Patreon, the people paying on Steam are buying a product and expect it to be worked on in a timely manner.

This came out in January 2019, so we're looking at around 2 and a half years to reach 0.7...

People would expect double that at the very least.
