Cheat engine works really well with it. The values aren't obfuscated, so just search for the number of credits or lives as they show up in the game.

The characters reset when lives FALL to zero, so if you want to switch characters, set lives to 1 and get hit a few times. Make sure you have enough credits though.

I'm really confused with cheat engine, I have no idea how to find which value is for the credits, the game says GAME OVER where the credits are shown so they're at 0, but there are a barrel load of 0 values.

just set the search mode to "All" it will take more time than the needed but, it works.
Or complete the game to unlock the Infinite Credits/ life cheat

you know the number of lives and credits you get, can be adjusted in the the levels.txt file
