The game uses the standard Renpy engine, which in turn uses FFmpeg for video output. Sometimes switching to a different renderer helps (press Shift+G and select), but sometimes it's a matter of drivers or hardware. VLC uses different (its own) codecs, so the result may vary. You can try searching in this section.
The issue may be that your graphics card does not support hardware decoding for the codec used in animations, so software decoding is used, which can be slow, especially when using FullHD and high bitrates. VLC may use its own codecs, perhaps they have implemented a GPU decoder or simply a more optimal one, so everything plays back well.
Find out which codec is in the video (check the properties in VLC) and look for information on what your video card supports. Maybe you can update the video driver or install a special codec.
You can also try a compressed version; the quality will be worse, but usually the video there is less demanding.

Is there a Chinese translation? The season 2 I purchased on Steam has multiple language translations, while the one posted here seems to only have English

Finally finished this update, and it was great. Classy Lemon Sorry for your family loss on the passing of your dad. It was a very touching tribute at the end.
Has to be one one the worst game performance wise i have played, after few min start freezing all the time on just basic dialogue, animation works great.

Try with a different renderer first, could be that the default isn't good for you, see a few messages above yours if you don't know how to do it.
That speaks more to your particular gears than the game, because it works perfectly fine and no freezing for 99% of us.
Has to be one of the worst cases of "it's always the fault of someone else and never me" I have witnessed around here.

Oh my well this game still have some graphic quality (one of the best if not the best in all AVNs I play) on the animations/cinematics and it is normal that will stutter in some very old machines. I have no issues on a maybe 4+ years old machine with a Intel core i7-6700 cpu @ 3400Ghz and a Nvidea GF GTX 1060 3GB gpu, I bought very cheap my machine in parts from friends that upgrade it to more up to date hardware and have no issues and have performance to spare on this game.Yes, because 100 other renpy games have 0 issues...
I advise people to make sure codecs and drivers up to date since that can make a lot of difference even on old machines and of course keep their devices/OS healthy hehe.
He said animations are fine though. It's the still images and text that are frozen for him, which is impressive actually

You can also check log.txt — sometimes you can see what the problem is there. It's also a good idea to analyse what's slowing you down in Task Manager — CPU, GPU or RAM. Or maybe it's some other process, like antivirus.
Every problem has a solution if you start looking for what's wrong.

Oh that is really weird. What? How still images get frozen?!? lol means that space bar or clicking doesn't move to the next render/dialogue? That is really weird and what can you do Classy when it is 1 in how many players that play the game with that particular issue and that has nothing to do with "game performance", seems more some kind of incompatibility between that particular renpy version? and their system. I can't really explain it or replicate it since it all works fine in my system.
dvstt if you can like colobankuz said, can you post your log file (edited if you need to hide anything), the file must be in the same folder than the .exe of the game, it makes a log file every time the game is run usually. Maybe we can find some issue there.
I thought it was again the same critic that season 2 specially compared with season 1 asks more from the hardware performance on the animations/cinematics, and it is true in part from the CPU, I even posted before the numbers of CPU and GPU usage in my system from season 2 compared with season 1 and my guess was about the renpy version used mixed with an increase of the animations video quality, it required IIRC on season 1 from the cpu around 10% and in season 2 asked from the cpu near 40%. The GPU stress/work asked was similar in both seasons. But for my system/CPU it is still more than enough to handle it, no frozen or stuttering/lag images. Still didn't checked the performance values on season 3 but all worked fine.

Hands down my favorite AVN! The story’s super funny and clever, and the animations are insanely good!
