well, in Chinese, Korean and Japanese, the word for male king is 王, and word for Queen is 女王 "female king" so.

Yeah... I'll be waiting for a save, since I'm also stuck at Sealance. The game is just not worth playing. Generic RPGM fight without any flavor, no enemy on the map, they randomly spawn when you move a tile, making traveling a fucking chore. No notion of choice. Will the maou be fucked by all the individuals with a penis that she meets ? Of course, since the game is extremely linear. Go to point A, then B, return to A, change region.

Damn, sounds like the discussion on correctly translating her title was more interesting than the game itself. I realise that good H-games are the exception rather than the rule but there's been so many terrible games popping up here in the last week.

I won't derail further after this, but I do want to point out you have a bit of a misconception.

You assert that the evolution of "queen" has made the practice of female kings defunct, but we've had relatively recent female kings too and the circumstances that create them never went away (we just don't have any currently).

Plus there's the whole bit where the gender neutral form of "King" is being used to this very day even in English through writing and media.

It's also besides the point since those were simply examples. The point was that the direct translation is both grammatically and contextually correct, so localizing it is inaccurate and unnecessary.

As I said earlier, althrough I haven't finished the game, the story is completely linear. There's no choice. Basically, the game only has "main quest", and each scene is part of these main quests. No choice, no option to avoid the sex scene.

Taking what you've said here and doing some googling on it I haven't found anything contradictory to my position. Different automated translators also translate 女魔王の復讐記 differently, some say demon queen. More commonly though, while the translation for 女王 by itself usually comes up as queen, with 魔 inbetween, 魔王 together seem to be treated as a title(devilking or demonking) in the same way as king cobra is a title(for a snake in this case). That would make sense, but as for "king" being gender neutral, we can agree to disagree.

Oh, lastly. I don't really think it's beside the point, outside of the former distinction of 魔王 together being the actual title or a species name, calling it a female demon king might be literally correct, but hardly grammatically or contextually correct. I suspect though we'd perhaps best agree to disagree on that as well.

Because that's not how translations work. If there's a direct and applicable translation, you don't "good enough" it by adlibbing for no reason, and you especially don't touch gendering because that fucks the context.

No that's exactly how translation works. You translate the meaning of the words and then localize them so they make sense in the language they're translated to. Otherwise MTL which directly translates word for word without any care for context or localization would be the gold standard.
Good translation doesn't need to be a perfect match to it's parent language, it needs to be a perfect match to its target language, which is how professional translations have functioned in almost every professionally translated movie, anime game or anything else almost ever.

The reason why it's "female demon king" is cuz there is a popular cultural concept of "the hero and the demon king" in Japan, popularized by the likes of Dragon Quest. The demon king is referred to as "maou," which literally means demon king. You could use "akuma no jo-ou" for demon queen but it's just nowhere near as iconic. "Majo-ou" doesn't work either, for various reasons, for one tihng, it too similar to the word for"witch." Hence, even when the "demon king" is female, they still call her "maou."

Sure, people can still translate it as "demon queen" like in the anime "Maouu Maou Yuusha" or Kagura Game's translation of Acerola's "Demon Queen Melissa" but the literal translation is still "demon king," specifically a male noun.

I have no stake in this demon king/demon queen debate, but can everyone agree that "female demon king" is a weird translation anyway? Demon king - ok. Demon queen - ok. Female demon king - why?
As for the game itself, gave up in less than 1 hour. So boring. The debate in this thread was more interesting. And what is this art? Didn't look bad at first glance, but some of the art is really weird.

Female kings are just kings. Sometimes with titles there's no nuance - like duke/duchess are just equivalencies - but queen often comes with the specific implication 'wife of a king' rather than 'the female ruler'.

No that's not how it works. Localisation is a second layer of edits on top of translation. The purpose is to alter the text to adapt it to a target demograph of people. (or fit the localisers narrative more)
