I just figured I shouldn't turn down her friends so I could get enough points with Rachel before the cinema date.

No, you don't need to turn down anyone, I think you got it wrong. when I DID refuse Rachel's friends it was when I couldn't start her path. Maybe I just missed some points here and there.
